Coding and Makerspaces

Objectives

• bring an awareness of coding, making, programming to K-12
• offer opportunities for teachers to come together to share how they are using coding, programming and making in the learning environment
• further enhance PSD’s work in critical thinking, inquiry-based learning and design thinking
• use technology, online learning and digital learning to have students access, share and create knowledge
• enable students to know how to learn in order to gain knowledge, understanding or skills through experience, study, and interaction with others
• think critically: conceptualize, apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate to construct knowledge
• innovate: create, generate and apply new ideas or concepts
• create opportunities through play, imagination, reflection, negotiation, and competition, with an entrepreneurial spirit
• apply multiple literacies: reading, writing, mathematics, technology, languages, media
• demonstrate good communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others
• measure the impact on these interactive opportunities on K-12 students
• discuss and share the impact on the learning environment from the teacher’s perspective
• prepare teachers to use technology and digital resources innovatively and effectively for learning, teaching, leadership and administration
• use technology and research to design personalized, authentic and student-centred learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs and interests of all students
• connect current educational technology research to the work that will be done during the length of the project
• form partnerships with community members such as Stanley A. Milner Library Makerspaces Team, Code.org, other school jurisdictions, MakerEd, Educational Technology Council of the Alberta Teachers Association (@ETCATA), IDEO in Education, Institute of Design at Stanford, local organizations and businesses.
