The development of skills related to self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision-making are critically important for all children. And all children have the ability to develop skills in these areas in order to meet personal goals.
For children who have additional social, emotional, behavioral, developmental, and physical needs, including those with disabilities, engagement in daily activities that help strengthen SEL skills is critical for forming a positive self-identity and developing healthy relationships. Many of the activities that are outlined in this website can be adapted to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Broadly, the accommodations that are outlined in your child's IEP or 504 plan can also be applied to SEL instruction. Some additional considerations including providing children with additional practice opportunities, providing additional scaffolded support, connecting activities to high-interest areas and background knowledge, providing continuous positive reinforcement, providing children multiple ways to communicate needs and demonstrate knowledge, connecting skill development to activities of daily living, and presenting language in ways that are consistent with their receptive language skills.
Below we offer some additional information about supporting the mental health of students with disabilities and their caregivers.
