Living Things

Caterpillars

Ms. Jamie (Science) and Ms. Seidel (Pre-K 102) ordered caterpillars! On this page of the website, we will track Ms. Seidel's caterpillars' growth and transformation into butterflies. Ms. Jamie will show us her caterpillars live during our Science sessions at morning meeting! We will observe them, draw them, and learn about their lifecycle.

Caterpillar Life Cycle

Day #1 - May 1st

Ms. Seidel receives her caterpillars! How many do you see in the cup? They are tiny, but they will grow fast! The brown stuff on the bottom of their cup is food made of plants to help them grow big and strong!

Day #3 - May 3rd

Do you notice anything different about our caterpillars? What changed? What looks the same? Do you have any questions about what you notice in the cup?

Day #5 - May 5th

They're getting bigger! See if you can zoom in and pick one caterpillar to make a detailed observation drawing!

Day #6 - May 6th

Check out this video to see what our caterpillars look like when they move! What do you think they are doing in there?

Day #8 - May 8th

What do you notice? What changed? What do you think the caterpillars are getting ready for?

Day #11 - May 11th

Our caterpillars are now chrysalides!

Day #12 - May 12th

We moved our chrysalides into the butterfly habitat! 5 are hanging from the lid of the cup and 1 is resting on the ground. Now we wait for them to emerge!

Day #17 - May 17th

Our butterflies have emerged from their chrysalides! The chrysalis shells are still hanging from the cup lid and our butterflies are stretching their wings and getting used to their new home! They will spend a few days here, drinking the juice from the orange and getting stronger. Soon, Ms. Seidel will release them outside so that they can lay eggs of their own!

Day #18 - May 18th

Our butterflies are beginning to drink from the orange and spread their wings!

Releasing Our Butterflies!

We know it can be sad to say goodbye, but our butterflies belong in nature where they can lay eggs and begin the caterpillar life cycle again!
