Preference Sheets
When can staff expect to receive them?
Staff Cafeteria
Need for:
Refrigerator/Microwave/Vending Machine/Mural on Walls
Used to have a vending machine for drinks/snacks- how do we go about getting one again?
Can we do a 50/50 raffle to pay for these?
Frangella has a refrigerator that she can donate- can this be approved?
Can custodial staff help with this? Can ask Bryan.
Refrigerator donation is approved by Ms. O’Brien. Need to come up with a system of name, date, food needs to be kept in a bag, person who cleans it up weekly. A person would need to volunteer to clean the refrigerator weekly.
Collection of Plans for Groups
Clarification needed for K-3: Submission of groups, activities each Monday
Concern is that the groups change and some teachers don’t plan the groups and activities until the day before based on current data.
This has been handled. There was a miscommunication between Ms. Casey and K-3 teachers.
Substitutes
Is it possible to have the subs that have any free periods to push into classrooms on a rotating basis to help the classroom teachers out?
Free periods to support classroom teachers? Subs have structured schedules and if they have extra time they are used.
311 Calls
Letter sent to staff- no new calls are being made
Staff Survey Results:
Question 1: Do you feel uncomfortable raising concerns directly to Chapter Leader, Ms. O’Brien and Bryan?
NO-71.8%
YES- 28.2%
Ms. O’Brien would like to know why. Perhaps its the fact that people do not want to become a nuisance.
Question 2: Do you feel ignored when you speak up?
NO-72.5%
YES- 27.5%
Question 3: Are there communication gaps we need to close to ensure you feel heard?
NO:53.7%
YES:48.8%
Principal O’Brien needs to know about the issues that are happening. Specific issues need to be brought to her attention. People need to support and help out in the community and the custodial team needs to be doing the things on their checklist. This will be a conversation with Ms. O’Brien and the custodian.
Middle School Transition Time
Discussed at safety meeting March, safety agents are needed and all available personnel are needed to be stationed in the MS hallway- NO ONE was there Monday, 3/23, several fights.
It's not consistent. Ms. Obrien feels that it something that happens when she is not here. She is working on it.
Kids use staff member visits as an excuse. Kids do not go straight to class. Middle School Teachers need to document it on section seats. Schedule needs to be made for this hall duty.
Bell System
Bells’ timing are off- can they be reset?
By a minute and ½ . Ms. O’Brien will speak to Bryan.
Air Conditioner Replacements
Which classes will be getting replacements?
No specific language. Speaking to Bryan. Assemblyman promised. Waiting for people to make good on their promises.
OPW Time
Have there been any issues with staff not moving time cards?
Are we monitoring people punching in to make up the time if they can’t do it Monday?
Paras are not good at this. Paras are not on time on a regular day. Angela will send an email about arriving to work on time.
SBO’s Next Year
OPW/PD: one day
7 period day for middle school
8 period day elementary school
Teacher teams K-5
PTC- one day
Should I send a survey to staff asking for their input if they are still interested in having these next year if agreed on by Principal?
Put out a survey for staff to gage the responses. SBOs will be very specific for teachers to understand the changes. 8 period day= 4 lunch periods
C6- Middle School
Drop Teacher Team for remainder of the year?
Postings(Revisiting)
Follow Up-No postings for morning positions/programs- cafeteria, Pre-K, Phys.Ed- this was not offered to all staff.
Lunch Periods
End of 5th Period Lunch- K-2 teachers are not picking up their classes on time and it’s pushing back on the 6th period lunch, causing the teachers to be late picking up- they are losing time at the beginning of their lunch.
Teachers are late as a result
Middle schoolers go up on their own after lunch. K-2 teachers need to pick their classes up on time. There may be confusion about the bells. Teachers need to pick up their students at the 1st bell.
Suspension/SAVE Room (revisiting)
There are students being dropped in the office unattended
Students are being placed in classrooms again
Middle School students are being placed in lower grades
Teachers are not being told why the kids are in there or for how long (even though they shouldn’t be there)
These kids are not being monitored, no work is being sent with them and no one is following up on them.
The same kids are repeatedly not following the directions. Kids are given work but not doing the work. Students can not always be put together. Parent meetings were held with each student's families. If Steele is sitting with kids all day then we lose a resource.
Tiered Behaviors: we can't remove kids every minute because teachers do not always monitor their tier 2 behaviors.
105 is not a prison. Teachers need to be accountable for what happens in their classroom.
Protocols
Strong need to be revisited- mid-end of year
Staff taking kids and not reporting to the teacher
If there is a fight and noone answers main office
Paraprofessionals (Revisiting)
Some paras remain on their phones, facetiming, carrying on conversations in the middle of lessons, do not sit with students, disappear, helping the teaching cut things out and assist the teacher when they should be with students, carry on conversations loudly in 12:1:1 as if a lesson is not going on.
Teachers have to speak up to Ms. O’Brien about paraprofessional egregious behavior.
Cafeteria
Being left filthy for custodians- an someone remind the AIDES to have the kids clean up
Lice
As per DOE:
Appointed person is needed and must be trained to conduct lice checks, not the school nurse
Letter must go home to person with lice
Parent must pick up child
NOT ALLOWED back in school until live bugs are gone and must be checked for 14 days. Once bugs are gone, student can stay. If live bugs are found again, the 14 day rule starts all over.
Consultation
1/27/26- Rescheduled next monday or a day after school
Attendees:
Ms. O’Brien-Principal
Heather Russo- UFT Chapter/Clusters
Kristie Ippolito- Early Childhood
Bonnie Krautheimer: Middle School
Ilene Manishor- AIS/Save Room
Angela Destafano- Para Rep
Christina O’Connell- Elementary
Observations:
First half of observation completion: January 23, 2026
How many people are not on track getting a favorable rating?
What trends do you see?
Answered in Ms. O’briens weekly email
PD
Coaching
How are we addressing those weaknesses?
-Observation feedback -next steps
New Teachers:
Voluntary Professional Development- On Tuesdays afterschool
Possible Solution: Conduct during Monday PD time. Or-if being held after hours, teachers need to be paid.
Possible Solution: Make a cohort of new staff/untenured staff for PD.
Many have after school obligations, second jobs, child care obligations. Many are scared to speak up.
-Use some of the senior teachers to guide the PDs?
Resolution: It is voluntary. Ms. Obrien is giving up her time also. You get time with your senior rating officer. Ms. Obrien is giving her time every other Tuesday. Can be done virtually. Ms. Obrien does ½ of the untenured teachers observations. So this is the time for the teachers to speak to Ms. Obrien. She is aware that the weekly mails are a lot. Tuesdays are for parsing it out so they do not feel overwhelmed. Ms. O'Brien gives time to the teachers. She hired them. She brought them here and does not want them to fail.
Paraprofessionals- Phone use, computer use during lessons, still an issue, some sit at their own area and not with a group and some are on active facetime calls during the lessons. Can another meeting be set with expectations?
Resolution: This will be addressed immediately. Teachers need to be very specific about what they're asking the paras to do. Everyone knows what they're supposed to do. 3 meetings have been held this year with Ms. Casey. If this is happening, please let Ms. Obrien know what is going on with your classroom adults.
Air Conditioners
Comes out of the Principal’s Budget
- How many need to be replaced?
My list shows 9 and the requests need to be submitted by 2/16.
My list is: 309, 319, 219,311,302,321,320, and 205
Shared with Brian 2/4/26
Resolution: Classroom condition affecting instruction. Procurement for these items need to be structured around instruction. It was escalated to central. Brian’s boss was here on 2/6/26. Funds were secured for replacement.
Need for Staff Meeting
Administration is allowed to use one PD a month for a Staff Meeting/OPW time?
Need for a reset with expectations: professional responsibilities/dos and don’ts in the building (vaping, speaking to students using appropriate language, posting pictures on social media, DOJO messages/anything in writing and a refresher for all staff on reporting students to the proper people- office called first and they call admin)
Resolution: Ms.Obrien is sending emails daily about these reminders instead of in the weekly emails to ensure that the information is not lost.
Administration Emails/Texts
Sent on weekends, early in the morning. This is creating a lot of anxiety.
Possible Solution: Schedule later on Sunday or Monday?
Emails have to go out before Monday. Read the email when you are ready. Scroll to the table of calendar of events. The email is to keep everyone on the same page.
Per Diem Funds
If per diem money is not spent, principals can cover a teacher for one day for a full day of planning at the end of the year.
Resolution: This not contractual. Ms. Obrien always puts money away for the end of the year for teacher planning.
Professional Development (Some of these were discussed during ILT 1/14)
Can ICT model be a PD offered to ICT Teachers- seems to be confusion as to what model they should be using/not using
Resolution: Yes, its scheduled
Attendance PD, staff is asking how this is professionally developing their craft?
Resolution: This is a PD topic. If your child is not in class they can not learn. Reaching out to parents is part of your professional practice.
PD- on IEP Writing- district has people they can send to support and provide this PD.
At the Special Education Meeting on 1/27/26, it was discussed how PD for any staff member that teaches our Spec. Ed population, should be attending ongoing PDS for behavior management, deescalation strategies, IEP writing, curriculum modifications and specific curriculums to teach reading.
9) First year teachers have questions about observations and debriefs.
Time to sit with administrators to discuss and ask questions.
Guidance on Danielson and what to expect.
Want to feel supported and successful.
Can administrators come in and model a lesson with the classes to show new teachers exactly what they are looking for.
10) Transition for middle school- there is a STRONG need to have staff like security and dean with some adults from intake during transitions and 815 on the 3rd floor.
11) There are middle school kids in the 3rd floor elementary hallways
12) Ms. Lora- is she hired full time? Wediko- new to staff? New Grade 2 Spec Ed teacher? SAPIS worker?
Resolution: HR is confidential. Mr. Goggins daily announcement will shout these people out.
Ms. Simon= Wedieko= assigned to Speech Room
Ms. Kiah= 2nd grade SE ICT= not new to UFT Hired full time teacher.
SAPIS worker=Lipsecomb 3 days/wkk= guidance room
Lora, Phillips, Lin, Narine= permanent subs
Consultation Notes
December 22,2025
Follow Up on Postings-Before School
Per Session: In the future, can additional per session opportunities be considered such as:
Writing IEPs
Planning
Attending school events
Classroom set-up for the requests from administration for HMH
Ink- Teachers were being told an order has been placed, is there an estimated date it will be here.
Students are being told to sit on the benches in the office by Mr. Steele and the Nurse while they wait for parents to come pick them up due to sickness. This is still not allowed.
How are observations going? What weaknesses do you see amongst the staff? These weaknesses are to drive Professional Developments on Monday afternoons not during teachers’ preps.
48 hours after the safety meeting, the minutes should be shared with the staff.
Phone Calls are being made by students to parents during the day by certain staff members in the office. Is this allowed?
Budget
Educational Consultants:
How were the consultants assigned?
How many do we have?
Can they be assigned to the untenured teachers for the next assignment even if it's next school year?
Next time the budget is worked on, can you consider budgeting for Transportation of Staff to and from Professional Developments? Many teachers have asked if they can be reimbursed as they have several PDs in far away locations and it is getting costly.
There is TRAC- but that is for itinerant workers who travel from school to school.
Consultation Notes: 11/25
Middle School Section Sheets-
Who receives it at the end of the day? Week?
Bathroom/attendance/behavioral anecdotal section. What is being done with the data? Teachers would like updates each week.
What are the consequences from the administration regarding the names on the section sheets, where names keep repeating
Names need to be updated. Some names are wrong or missing.
Middle School requests behavior policy: If the student does….. Then….. They want clear writing to hold the kids accountable.
Needs to be updated & revised
Little communication of section sheets to students
200 middle school students
Form created for repeat offenders by obrien & goggin
Middle school, supervisor & dean to have a conversation
All teachers need to be on board.
What's sustainable for the whole staff?
Ladder of consequences need to be followed
School community needs to assume best intentions in the school
Lockdown: Alternate Learning Environment
Teachers are leaving the rooms a mess, and the other teachers are having to clean it up- addressed at UFT meeting.
It was called a “RESET”- What are we resetting to? Clear expectations should be discussed with both staff and students.
If the same students are having an issue day after day during lockdown, what are the consequences? How many students are still not in compliance?
No set time, teachers are to refer to the email sent by Ms. O’Brien
Communication about the Middle School incident- staff are circulating different stories of what happened, and staff needs clarity.
Confidential incident, investigation in process
Happened off of school grounds
Follow-up - Per session postings
Coaches-
Generation Ready Coach visits-
What is the length of a coaching cycle?
What is the progression of the cycle? (What is the goal?)
When is the time to move on to other teachers in need?
meeting with teachers during preps, teachers are complaining they do not have time to prepare in school.
You can tell the coach that you do not have time to debrief, can be sent as an email. Be careful about denying coach support especially if observations show that support is needed. Each coach has a plan with specific dates.
Data is used for the coaching. Coach may not change teacher, may change the goal.
Goal is explicit instruction using HMH
As per union- teachers are entitled to one prep each day- double prep on another day is not allowed. Meeting with coaches is not allowed during a prep- coverage needs to be given. Find contract language
Do not have enough clusters to cover
Last year 3-5 had ⅘ in a row
This year K-2 has more
We don't have the space for small class
Reduce out of classroom positions could happen due to the structure?
Paras need PD specified for Paraprofessionals- principals can reach out to find out what PDs are available- deescalation, BIP writing- there was a PD for paras- none went since it overlapped with the staff meeting on 11/5.
Our paras have had deescalation training on election day
Ms. Carroll had facilitated many PDs during the 2024-2025
Paras need to uphold their professional duties, will be come an accountability issue
Ms. Casey has meetings with them regarding these issues. Has been done 2x.
How many teachers are non-tenured? Can ask Andre Rodriguez to come speak to members about certification, licensing, and tenure
9 teachers
When visitors come to the room- will you count them for an observation? It wouldn’t be fair to do for some and not for others. Can have 3 observers, but only one person can give the rating.
Can always ask for the observation to be written for Advance
Can visitors/subs be given visitor passes at security to wear so staff can identify them?
Visitors should have a blue pass displayed on their person
Water cooler? Can it be purchased for the staff?
Health Para- 6th grade needs 2
2 paras starting today
Some paras are not doing what they need to do
Extra materials at the end of units- can there be a central location for the following year and inventory to be taken so that we don’t need to order when we already have.
Teachers should take their own inventory
Ms. Obrien asks for an inventory
Lunch- teachers are required to be there by the first bell, but MS is leaving late, cutting into the teachers’ lunch.
Middle school is not cleared out
K-2 needs to drop off at the 2nd bell. Causing the congestion
K-2 should line up in the gym hallway
*Preparation time for the WIN period- will be worked into PD time- going forward, it will be given in advance. Week one was given close to implementation time with little time to look it over to prepare, but it will not be that going forward.
*How do teachers submit for Phonics training- Casey gave to O’Brien to clarify.
