All vertical lines stay vertical
All horizontal lines are drawn at 30 degrees
Keep parallel lines parallel
Use isometric grid paper when starting out to help with angles
Start with the main shape's front corner
Draw vertical lines first
Draw 30° lines next for width and depth
Build other features from these main lines
Work from front to back of the drawing
Measure along the isometric axes, not horizontally or vertically
All measurements on parallel lines should be equal
Use an isometric scale when needed
Remember that circles appear as ellipses
Don't try to draw angles other than 30° and 90°
Don't draw horizontal or vertical lines (except true verticals)
Don't eyeball measurements - use proper tools
Don't forget that hidden features should be shown with dashed lines
Circles must be drawn as ellipses in isometric
Use the "four-center method" for drawing isometric circles
Break curves into smaller sections
Practice drawing basic shapes before attempting complex curves
Always use a ruler or straight edge
Keep lines light until you're sure they're correct
Check that parallel lines stay parallel
Work systematically from front to back
Ask the teacher to build you a simple object out of the linking cubes that you will draw and then have her check.
Student correctly:
Use at least 3 different types of Lego sizes and at least 8 bricks to create a build that you will then draw in isometric view. Your build cannot be a rectangle or square. You must show your build and drawing to your teacher for checking.
