A zoo is a place where all types of animals are confined and displayed for the public to see.
In many zoos the animals are also studied and bred. There are hundreds of zoos all over the world.
The first zoo to open in the United States was in New York. The year was 1860, and it was called the Central Park Zoo.
Many zoos also have a petting zoo where children are allowed a close-up look at animals, many of them babies.
Zoos create educational programs and tours in order to provide an educational opportunity for everyone.
The San Diego Zoo has a website just for kids with amazing videos, activities, and games. Enjoy the tour! You can also check out these Animal Live Cams.
Check out the Panda Cam at Zoo Atlanta who have the only panda twins in the United States, Ya Lun and Xi Lun.
Every weekday at 3 PM EDT, the Cincinnati Zoo will host a Home Safari Facebook Live that features a different animal each day. For those who don't have social media, the zoo will post the safaris on both their website and YouTube.

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest of the rainforests, supporting a huge number of plants and animals and hugely important to our own survival. Taking up most of the Amazon Basin, the Amazon rainforest is mostly contained within Brazil, and stretches into Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and smaller parts of some other South American countries. I listed a few facts about the rainforest.
Around 80% of the food we eat originally came from rainforests. Some of the more popular examples include coffee, chocolate, rice, tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, black pepper, pineapples and corn.
Tropical rainforests only cover about 6% of the Earth’s surface, but they are home to more than half the world’s total plant and animal species.
Over a quarter of the medicines we use today have their origins in the rainforests – and that’s after only about 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medicinal properties.
The rainforests have begun to be destroyed in the last 100 years to make way for farm land. Today, the rainforests are being destroyed by 1.5 acres every second. :-(
There are around 3000 fruits found in rainforests, and in the west we make use of around 200 of them. However, indigenous tribes make use of over 2000!
