Love and Sacrifice

We had a wonderful meeting this week. Some would say that discussions that ensued on the subject of "Love and Sacrifice" are the reasons why we decided to be part of this group in the first place.

We listened to a portion of Dale Ahlquist's talk on G.K. Chesterton titled "The Incredible Mind of G.K. Chesterton" as a way of centering our discussions on Love and Sacrifice as they relate to marriage and our vocations as husbands and fathers.

I managed to copy a few of the things that were said in our groups and I transcribed them below. They are, by no means, the entirety of the wonderful discussions we had. If you would like to get a copy of the CD you will find it in the Lighthouse Catholic Media under "The Incredible Mind of G.K. Chesterton."

  • If marriages are dissolved because of the incompatibility of the spouses then marriage does not exists. Marriage requires two individuals work out their incompatibilities; it is a duel to the death!

  • Frivolous divorce means frivolous marriages.

  • Sex is the only instinct that produces an institution (Family). It is a life-giving act. God in essence creates a new moon and a new sun - indeed an entirely new creation - because a new-born child will experience for the first time ever.

  • How does love require sacrifice?

  • Can love be fruitful without sacrifice?

  • When have I placed my own liberty before others? How does this affect their lives?

  • Our whole purpose in life as husbands is to be the best partner our wives need, not to make them the best partners we need.

  • In marriage there is no point of no return.
