Simple and effective. I am increasingly safe and secure because I have a guardian angel as I make my way through the city. This guardian angel is an app that we discovered this week on App Wednesday. Tara Furgeson found this gem that helps everyone feel a little bit safer when they walk. They now have a companion to walk with them even if they aren't right there. Today we are looking the Companion app on Dotto Tech.

Companion - Never Walk Home Alone. The whole idea behind this app is to use your smartphone to monitor your progress as you are leaving one place and going to another and letting some friends or family know you are on your way. Putting someone on alert so if you need help or feel nervous on the trip, they can then intercede in some way. When I saw this app immediately the first thing I thought was, this is an awesome app for parents and kids.

Companion is available both on Android and iOS. A very simple app, you have a starting point and end point to your trip. You input where you are walking from and to. You then click on the start trip button and choose who you want to alert that you are on your way. You can alert family or friends close by, or they can be across the country because it is all done through text messaging. Once you have selected someone to track you, once they have accepted, you will receive a text message that they have accepted.

As you are traveling and you feel nervous about something you can simply tap on the option already on the phone and you can send a text message instantaneously to whomever is on your list, letting them know you are feeling a bit nervous. If you find yourself in a more serious situation you can tap the alert mode that will notify the emergency services immediately and put you in contact with them. This app provides a great deal of comfort and allows a quicker response time.

DAYTON -- Do you feel nervous walking alone at night? Well, now you don't have to. Never walk home alone, thanks to a new safety app. In this Keeping Families Safe report we take along our FOX 45 intern to see how it works. We test this safety app called Companion. It was created by several University of Michigan students. I run into situations where i get scared a lot, intern Margaret Bukowski said. Bukowski, a junior at the University of Dayton, says she gets nervous walking across campus at night. You just never know who is going to be around the corner, she said. So Margaret is going to use the Companion app with the help of her friend Tori. First, Margaret requests Tori be her companion. Then as Margaret walks Tori can track her friends course. If Margaret feels nervous Tori gets a notification to check in on her friend. Margaret also has a button on the app that will immediately call 911. The app also uses the phone's built-in sensors to detect changes in movement -- like if the user starts running. If that happens, it asks users to confirm they're OK. If they don't do so within 15 seconds, the app notifies your companion who has the option to call police. The app will also go into alert mode for the walker, emitting siren-like noises and displaying a button to call the police. Once Margaret reaches her destination, Tori gets an alert that Margaret is safe. The fact that you know your friend is virtually with you is amazing, Margaret said. These are awesome tools for them to have, security expert Bill Persons said. Parsons says it's important we're not entirely focused on our phones while walking. They need to keep phone in hand but need to be scanning all the time, not fixated on the phone, because they are going to miss some of those critical things they should be seeing, Parsons said. There are dozens of safety apps out there. Parsons says to check different ones out to see which one works best for you. And if you have any story ideas to help keep families safe, email
