Teaching Methods and Strategies

Teaching Strategies & Lesson Outcomes

In conversations with Instructors and by reviewing their courses and/or Moodle content and activities, the ETC department can provide support and development in teaching methods and strategies. We recognize the importance in developing learning activities that are engaging, relevant, and tied to course outcomes. We can also provide support in writing organized and efficient lesson plans.

Some resources that we have compiled on lesson planning, teaching strategies, building a positive learning environment can be found here.

When creating the outcomes for your individual lesson plans, you can follow a similar format to the information provided on writing course outcomes and competency statements. Please refer to that page on this site.

If you are interested in more professional development in this area, the following workshops are offered at various times throughout the semester:

  • ISS 5001 - Quality Instruction in a Post-Secondary Learning Environment
  • ISS 5003 - Connecting Instruction with Technology
  • ISS 5004 - Designing the Learning Experience

Please contact the ETC department for a schedule of delivery dates. These courses are recommended for all contract, temporary, and permanent staff, and are a requirement for probationary faculty.

Assessments & Evaluations

In the course development and review process, creating effective and engaging student assessments and evaluations is one of the most important steps. We can offer support to instructors in this area by discussing the importance of feedback and assessments appropriate to the course profile, and assisting with the design of these assessment and evaluation strategies. All assessment and evaluation strategies should be connected to a course outcome from the competency profile.

Some resources that we have compiled on building effective assessments, evaluations, and feedback can be found here.
