Day 8
Today, I helped out with a patient who has both a torn labrum and a herniated disc. Diane asked Elsa and me to take him through some band exercises. One of the exercises we worked on was monster walks using a high level of resistance in the band. It was cool getting more hands-on involvement with patients and helping guide them through movements and positioning.
Me and Elsa also helped set up stim pads for a patient who needed stimulation treatment on his back. We had to correctly place the pads and connect the red and black wires in the right spots to make sure the current flowed properly and provided the intended benefit to the body. It was interesting learning how much setup and precision goes into even some of the smaller treatments in the clinic.
I also had my phone call today with the Holy Cross alumnus I was connected with through one of Diane’s patients. We talked for about an hour. During the conversation, we discussed his college experience, my life story, and left the door open for more conversations in the future. Overall, it was a great conversation with a great guy, and it showed me again how many opportunities and connections can come from simple interactions with people. I thanked Diane for letting me hold the call during my time here, she was very generous and even let me use her office.
Later in the day, Diane showed Elsa and me how to properly use the cups for cupping therapy. We actually tested them on ourselves. My legs were hurting, so it ended up working out pretty well for me. Diane explained that you need to apply massage oil or another type of lubricant to create a strong enough seal and suction. Without it, the cups will just pop off the skin.
I also took my knee test today. I was really nervous going into it and worried I was going to forget something, even after all the hours I spent studying. Fortunately, I usually perform best under pressure, and like they say, pressure makes diamonds. I ended up getting a 100% on the test. As a reward for finishing this one, Diane already gave us materials to start studying for our next test. I can’t wait to get started...
