The Simpson's Diversity Index is a formula for calculating species population density. Diversity in a pond is crucial to knowing if it is healthy. A higher diversity index means more abundant ecological species. After relatively accurate data collection and careful calculations this year, our diversity index is 10.67, which means that the pond is home to a wide variety of species. Species are more diverse today than in previous years.
This graph lists all species richness indices since 2007, and we can see that this index has been slowly increasing since 2020!
Each disturbance event can lead to a possible decrease of the diversity index, the best example is the early frost on 2009----which makes the index decrease sharply from 15.4 to 0.74.
As we can see in the graph, Since 2018, the species richness of Proctor Pond has gradually increased, and this year it has reached 10 for the first time.
