Intent

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY INTENT STATEMENT -

It is our intent for Design Technology to offer children the chance to use creative thinking and design within a defined purpose and have a tangible outcome. Within this, children have the opportunity to develop specific skills in using a range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients.

At The Prince of Wales School Design Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, children are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in a process of design, making and evaluating. Often Design Technology is woven into a wider curriculum here, where children can make links with different subjects, especially through our range of themed weeks throughout the year. Our units of work give children the opportunity to think creatively and imaginatively, design, use a wide range of materials and make products that solve real problems and evaluate product effectiveness in a wide range of contexts. Design Technology is also the ideal vehicle to use and apply skills and knowledge from other curriculum areas such as Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art, giving purpose and value to previous learning and opportunities to apply it.

It is our aim that children see the value and benefit of a range of designs and designers and the impact design has within our lives. In engaging in the design process children learn how to take risks, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.

Design Technology is a highly relevant subject. It makes a clear and essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation and as such is an essential part of a broad and balanced curriculum at The Prince of Wales School. We are committed to the future development of the subject within our plans for STEAM.

(The investigate, design, make and evaluate cycle underpins our teaching methods and harnesses our attitude to learning across the curriculum. We are investing time and effort into the Design for Learning approach, celebrating an evaluative and independent skills that underpin our philosophy. Giving all children opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate their learning and become innovators and risk-takers.)
