DESIGN TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION -

In Design Technology in the early years, explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities. They have the opportunities to learn to:

We teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the process of designing and making in a range of relevant contexts.  Units of work are largely woven into our topics and have a clear progression of both knowledge and skills through each year group. (See knowledge organisers)

Additional themes are built in through our inspired learning weeks which allows time for extended project work, mixed age teaching as well as additional visitors and trips outside school.

All teaching of design technology takes place incorporating the following essential elements:

Technical Knowledge - Learn how to Strengthen, stiffen and reinforce complex structures, use and understand mechanical, electrical and computer systems.

Designing - Use of design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose and aimed at particular individuals or groups.  Ideas will be communicated through discussion, sketches, diagrams, prototypes, patterns and computer aided design.

Making - Children will select from a range of materials (construction materials, textiles and ingredients) according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities  and choose equipment to perform tasks (cutting, shaping, joining, finishing) accurately.

Evaluating - Investigate and analyse a range of existing products.  Children evaluate own ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others.  Understand key events and the contribution of others to global change.
