Personal and Cultural Development

At the Prince of Wales School we recognise the impact that Music has on people of all ages and how it is woven into the fabric of our past and current lives. Music is a universal language and promotes the highest forms of creativity and Music is the gateway to understanding each other and give us endless opportunities to explore our creative natures.

The National Curriculum expects children in Key Stage Two to 'appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians and develop an understanding of the history of music.'  Department of Education 2021.

We have launched an ambitious whole school curriculum to not only meet this requirement but extend children's knowledge and musical experiences.

Each year group will study:

Two Classical Composers,

A Film Composer,

Contemporary Composer/ Performer,

Musical Theatre Show

Music Genre

Children will learn about the structure of Orchestras, key musical forms such as concertos, sonatas and symphonies, how music has changed over time and will experience some of the greatest music ever composed, performed by the world's greatest performers.

Each Music lesson starts with dedicated time to listen and discuss their thoughts, ideas and musical understanding based on a piece of music. Giving children this time supports their exploration of their understanding of what Music is and helps them form their own opinions on the greatest works of history.

Our Personal and Cultural Development Curriculum is supported by our whole school singing and music curriculum which is delivered weekly during our Singing and Music Assemblies.
