Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." - Dr. Seuss
Lab CARES is based out of Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. We are dedicated to investigating Cultural And Risk factors of Eating disorders and Suicidality (CARES). Under the leadership of Dr. Mun Yee Kwan, we aim to better understand the underlying cultural, social, interpersonal, and emotional risk factors behind disordered eating and suicidal behavior.
In order to realize this vision, we conduct a variety of research studies examining such topics as:
The mechanisms involved in disordered eating and suicidal behavior.
The effect of interpersonal behavior and functioning on eating behavior and suicidal behavior.
Cultural influences on body ideal, body perception, and eating behavior.
The role of media on body image and related concerns.
Through this research we seek to better understand, and ultimately treat and prevent, disordered eating and intervene with suicidal behavior.
Lab CARES was founded by Dr. Mun Yee Kwan in 2017 at West Texas A&M University. In 2022, Lab CARES found a home at Hofstra University. The CARES Clinic began at Hofstra University in 2025. Our work is grounded in the lived-experiences of those affected by eating disorders, suicidality, and self-injury.
Lab CARES values and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusivity. Our lab is committed to active anti-racism and the dismantling of all systems of oppression.
We strive to maintain an environment that is free from discrimination and to foster a sense of belonging and an atmosphere where everyone feels welcomed, accepted, and respected. As researchers, we occupy a privileged position to shape our field and community. We acknowledge the current landscape of racism, ableism, sexism, and discrimination towards LGBTQ+, especially transgender communities. We recognize the field of clinical psychology was created from this landscape and has caused harm to these communities. Through contending with its past, the field of clinical psychology can also be a place for growth, healing, and liberation.
Our logo is the lotus flower and dove. As a symbol of healing and growth, the lotus exemplifies our lab values. The dove, representing hope and peace, guides us towards our future. Our lab mascot, the axolotl, is a type of salamander whose regenerative abilities embody healing.
