Why do some logos become iconic? How do architects communicate ideas before a building is built? What makes a product easy to use or a poster impossible to ignore? Every object, space and visual message around us has been carefully designed.
In this subject you'll think and work like a designer, exploring how ideas are transformed into visual solutions. Through drawing, model-making and digital design, you'll respond to creative design briefs while experimenting with typography, branding, illustration, product design, architecture and environmental design. You'll learn how designers use visual language to communicate with different audiences, solve real-world problems and bring ideas to life.
Whether you enjoy drawing, architecture, graphic design or creative problem-solving, this subject will help you develop a portfolio of original design work while building the confidence to communicate ideas with creativity, purpose and impact.
Have you ever wondered why some videos go viral while others disappear without a trace? Why do some photographs tell powerful stories? How do filmmakers, photographers and content creators use images, sound and editing to capture our attention and shape the way we see the world?
In this practical subject you'll explore the creative and technical side of media while producing your own photography, short films and digital content. You'll experiment with camera techniques, lighting, sound, editing and visual storytelling, learning how professional media creators communicate ideas and connect with audiences. Along the way you'll investigate how media influences culture, represents people and places, and shapes our understanding of the world. Whether you're interested in filmmaking, photography, social media, advertising or digital storytelling, this subject will help you become a confident creator, critical thinker and informed media consumer.
Scope
Art is an integral part of life and contributes to a progressive society. Artworks and visual language are a potent and dynamic means to communicate personal experiences and ideas, and cultural values, beliefs and viewpoints on experiences and issues in contemporary society. In the study of VCE Art Creative Practice, research and investigation inform art making. Through the study of artworks, the practices of artists and their role in society, students develop their individual art practice, and communicate ideas and meaning using a range of materials, techniques and processes. This study provides students with an informed context to support an awareness of art as a tool for cultural, social and personal communication, and the stimulus and inspiration to develop their art practice.
Rationale
VCE Art Creative Practice explores the role of art in shaping cultural knowledge and expression, both historically and in contemporary society. Students investigate how artists communicate ideas, beliefs, and experiences through their work, and develop visual literacy by analysing artworks across time and cultures. Through both independent and collaborative practice, students solve creative problems and produce meaningful artworks. The course builds critical and creative thinking skills, preparing students for further study or careers in the arts and other fields that value conceptual and visual communication.
Scope
VCE Art Making and Exhibiting introduces students to the methods used to make artworks and how artworks are presented and exhibited. Students use inquiry learning to explore, develop and refine the use of materials, techniques and processes and to develop their knowledge and understanding of the ways artworks are made. They learn how art elements and art principles are used to create aesthetic qualities in artworks and how ideas are communicated through the use of visual language. Their knowledge and skills evolve through the experience of making and presenting their own artworks and through the viewing and analysis of artworks by other artists. Visiting and viewing exhibitions and displays of artwork is a necessary part of this study. It helps students understand how artworks are displayed and exhibitions are curated. It also has an influence on the students’ own practice, and encourages them to broaden and develop their own ideas and thinking around their own art making
Rational
Learning in VCE Art Making and Exhibiting provides students with opportunities to recognise their individual potential as artists, encourages self-expression and creativity, and can build confidence and a sense of individual identity. The study allows students to explore and experiment in creating, developing and engaging with the visual arts and helps build a strong skill set. Learning through, about and in the visual arts develops students’ critical thinking skills and their ability to interpret the worlds they live in. Students are encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively, as learning from each other can develop innovative and exciting ideas.
Scope
Media is deeply embedded in our lives and culture, entertaining, informing and shaping how we understand ourselves and the world around us. At the heart of media are stories and representations that reflect and reimagine ideas, realities and experiences.
In Media, students explore how media products are created, consumed and interpreted within different social, cultural and technological contexts. They examine the relationship between media and audiences, considering ideas of influence, power, agency and the ways media can shape views and values.
As technology and social media transform how information and stories are produced and shared, students investigate the changing media landscape and its impact on traditional media, industries and audiences. Through studying and creating media, students develop a critical understanding of their role as both consumers and producers in an increasingly connected media world.
Rationale
This study provides students with the opportunity to examine the media in both historical and contemporary contexts while developing skills in media design and production in a range of media forms.
VCE Media provides students with the opportunity to analyse media concepts, forms and products in an informed and critical way. Students consider narratives, technologies and processes from various perspectives, including an analysis of structure and features. They examine debates about the role of the media in contributing to and influencing society. Students integrate these aspects of the study through the individual design and production of their media representations, narratives and products.
VCE Media supports students to develop and refine their planning and analytical skills, and their critical and creative thinking and expression, and to strengthen their communication skills and technical knowledge
