This is a practical Mathematics subject designed to help students rebuild confidence, strengthen foundational numeracy skills, and reconnect with mathematics through real-world applications.
This course supports students who may have found mathematics challenging in the past and focuses on making maths relevant, achievable, and useful for everyday life.
Students will investigate how mathematics is used in personal life through exploring basic concepts of finance, budgeting, numbers in social media, etc. Through teacher-led activities, practical investigations and authentic scenarios, students will develop mathematical skills useful for adult life with greater confidence and independence.

This subject builds on the practical and real-world learning developed in Life Maths: A, continuing to support students in strengthening confidence, foundational numeracy, and problem-solving skills through meaningful everyday applications.
Students will investigate how mathematics influences games, risk, financial decisions, data interpretation and the world around them. The course focuses on developing mathematical understanding through authentic contexts, collaborative learning, and practical exploration.

You’ll investigate geometry, statistics and probability through rich, real-world problems and challenging, mathematically complex investigations. Building on Advanced Mathematics A, you’ll further strengthen your reasoning, independence and resilience—because even the best mathematicians continue to refine their thinking with every challenge.
If you’re ready to extend your thinking, analyse complex systems and keep multiplying your mathematical potential, this course will help you stay on the fast track to advanced senior mathematics pathways like VCE Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics or IB Mathematics AA.
General Mathematics Units 1–4 provide for the study of non-calculus and discrete mathematics topics. They are designed to be widely accessible and provide preparation for general employment, business or further study, in particular where data analysis, recursion and financial modelling, networks and matrices are important. Students who have done only Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 will have had access to assumed key knowledge and key skills for General Mathematics Units 3 and 4 but may also need to undertake some supplementary study.
In undertaking these units, students are expected to be able to apply techniques, routines and processes involving rational and real arithmetic, sets, lists, tables, matrices, diagrams, networks and geometric constructions, algorithms, algebraic manipulation, recurrence relations, equations and graphs, with and without the use of technology. They should have facility with relevant mental and by-hand approaches to estimation and computation. The use of numerical, graphical, geometric, symbolic, financial and statistical functionality of technology for teaching and learning mathematics, for working mathematically, and in related assessment, is to be incorporated throughout each unit as applicable.
Mathematical Methods Units 1–4 provide for the study of simple elementary functions, transformations and combinations of these functions, algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, and their applications in a variety of practical and theoretical contexts. They also provide background for further study in, for example, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), humanities, economics and medicine.
In undertaking these units, students are expected to apply techniques, routines and processes involving rational and real arithmetic, sets, lists and tables, diagrams and geometric constructions, algorithms, algebraic manipulation, equations, graphs, differentiation and anti-differentiation, with and without the use of technology. Students should develop facility with relevant mental and by-hand approaches to estimation and computation. The use of numerical, graphical, geometric, symbolic and statistical functionality of technology for teaching and learning mathematics, working mathematically, and related assessment is incorporated throughout the unit where appropriate.
*Students undertaking Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 are assumed to have a sound background in number, algebra, function, geometry, probability and statistics.
