Our Languages program provides students with the opportunity to develop communication skills and cultural understanding through the study of a language.
In Year 8 students build foundational language skills in French, with an option to continue in Years 9 and 10 through our Vertical Electives Program. They also have an additional option to study Japanese.
In years 11 and 12 students can pursue French through the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, supporting global perspectives and multilingual competence. Alternatively they can explore other languages through the Victoria's Virtual Language School.

FRENCH IS OFFERED FOR A FULL YEAR TO YEARS 9 AND 10
AS PART OF OUR VERTICAL ELECTIVES PROGRAM
Do you have opinions about music, food, travel, sport, or literally anything? Then you've already got a great foundation for this class!
Le Monde Francophone is a Year 9-10 French class where people, culture, and conversations are at the centre. We'll practise all four language skills - speaking, listening, reading, and writing - through topics you help choose, connected to the global French-speaking world around you.
French isn't just spoken in France. Over 300 million people across Europe, Africa, the Pacific, the Caribbean, and Canada speak it. This class takes you there.
At the start of the semester, the class chooses the topics we explore together. Past topics have included ordering at French markets, planning camps, designing your own clothing store, and talking about film. Whatever you're into, if you can talk about it, we can do it in French
By the end of this subject, you'll be able to hold a short conversation, share opinions, and understand and respond to real French content, including songs, articles, videos, or social posts, from the francophone world.
JAPANESE IS OFFERED FOR A FULL YEAR AS PART OF OUR
YEARS 8 to 10 VERTICAL ELECTIVES PROGRAM
If you've ever watched anime, read manga, or been curious about Harajuku fashion, Tokyo street food, or Japanese gaming culture, you've already started learning about Japan. Now it's time to learn the language that goes with it!
Tokyo Tales is an absolute-beginner Japanese class built around stories, characters, and conversation. Instead of memorising lists of words and grammar rules before you're allowed to speak, you'll pick up real, useable Japanese the way people actually learn languages, by listening to and telling stories, playing games, and gradually understanding more and more without even noticing it happening.
By the end of this subject, you'll be able to introduce yourself, hold simple conversations, and understand basic spoken and written Japanese, all built through fun, low-pressure, story-driven lessons.
No prior knowledge of Japanese is needed. Just curiosity. Ganbatte!
