attenda This is a seminar style course wherein at least half of your required writing is done in class, with active peer and instructor feedback provided in our session time. In addition to attendance being critical for engagement, remaining caught up with topics and discussions, and for participation in group work, attendance in seminar is necessary for you to remain up to date on assignments.
However, there are always a range of challenges, health and emergency situations beyond our control to which the way our course operates will need to be responsive. What this looks like on the ground is that while this class is designed to be “fully in person,” it also seeks to be realistic in anticipating myriad unexpected conditions from the personal to the global.
As you’ve experienced over the past few years, we’ve entered an unprecedented period wherein large scale systemic and environmental changes have demanded our resilience and responsiveness, changing the way we live, teach and work. We will talk about this together as an opportunity for thinking critically and creatively about the ways in which both humans and institutions need to continuously evolve.
Firstly, as circumstances require, certain sessions of this class may be moved to zoom and/or there might be asynchronous materials provided. Next, there is an understanding that due to a need to quarantine, travel restrictions, or other conditions beyond student control, you may at times need to join our class virtually. This option is made possible on a case-by-case basis and should be the first option if you’re not able to physically attend. When you need to miss a session, or aren’t able to complete work by an upcoming session, communication is key – email me as soon as you know you might be absent, as some changes to the plan for our course time might be necessary.
In our class, students are expected to play an active role in finding a path to making sure their work is complete in a timely manner, to show up prepared, or to take steps to communicate if this isn’t possible, considering and suggesting concrete solutions if work or class sessions are missed.
