Here are some resources that we hope will help as you transition into Middle School!
Student Tours!
5th grade students will have an opportunity to tour HTMS, with their feeder schools, and talk with staff and current students in the spring (late April 2026) - If your student does not currently attend one of our feeder schools, please contact either Ms.Drew (adrew@pps.net) and we will make sure your student can attend one of the tour dates. We will also host a 5th Grade Family Night in early May. Stay tuned for details!
More details will come as the year goes on, though below you will find some info on forecasting.
Elective Selections
Please consider your elective selections carefully. We will do our best to enroll you into your preferred elective, but it is helpful to give us a variety of options when making your selections, in case you don't get your top choices. Electives you select are not guaranteed, but we will do our best to honor what you have shared with us.
Specific Teacher Requests
We are unable to honor requests for specific teachers in order to keep scheduling fair for all students. We have many caring and talented educators and look forward to helping you reach your potential.
Changes After the Start of School Schedule Has Been Built
Students are not guaranteed elective selections. Elective forecasting is a tool for students to express preferences, which we try to incorporate in individual student schedules as we build the start of the school year schedules. We work hard to ensure the best possible schedule for all students, including honoring student choice and preference; we also know that it is beneficial for students to have the chance to try new things that they may not yet know are of interest. We are generally not able to make changes to students overall schedules after the schedules have been built except in case of an error (duplicate class, wrong grade level class, student doesn’t have prerequisites for advanced class) or sometimes elective choices. See below for mor details.
If you're interested in changing one of your elective classes, we will have a form available for you, middle schoolers*, to fill out with the changes you are requesting. While we cannot guarantee any changes, Ms. Drew or Ms. Benice will contact you to schedule a meeting after having a chance to review your request, to talk through options. Thank you!
*Parents/Guardians/Families: We understand that middle school can be a big change not just for your student, but for you, as well. Please allow your student to fill out the schedule change request form themselves, as this allows them to start building their advocacy skills (and it allows them to try new things if a schedule change cannot be accommodated).
If you have any questions, please feel free to submit your questions here. If it is an individual question, we will respond to you directly. If the answer serves the community as a whole, we will put out information to all incoming 6th graders.
