About VILS

Verizon Innovative Learning is about providing technology, education, and opportunity for all students. The program provides each student and teacher in the VILS programs with a device, a 30 gigabyte data plan, and an instructional coach to help students and teachers leverage technology to meet learning goals. To date, VILS has reached 264 schools, 14,311 teachers, and 212,392 students.

Digital Promise is a non-profit organization signed into law in 2008 and launched in 2011 with funds from the U.S. Department of Education and charitable organizations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Its mission is to improve education and learning through the use of digital technologies.

The 2020-2021 school year is the first year of Verizon Innovative Learning in Portland Public Schools. Five select schools – César Chávez, Faubion, Harrison Park, Lent, and Marysville began this two year grant in 20-21, with George, Lane, and Roosevelt joining in 21-22, as well as Kellogg which absorbed Lane and Marysville. The coaches assigned to each school work under the guidance of the Department of Learning Technologies at PPS.
