The goals of this PD session were to have teacher teams look ahead at their next math unit for backwards planning purpose, with a specific focus in language and vocabulary that students needed to access the unit. Teams were asked complete the end of unit assessment for that unit and do the math their students would be asked to do. Teams then had time to reflect on the mathematics seen in the assessment, consider the DOK level of the tasks, and the necessary vocabulary students would need. Grade level teams then reflected on how to adjust instruction or the assessment to best meet the needs of students. Teachers used a think-pair-share routine during the session to engage in discussion and also to consider ways to bring this routine back to their classroom.
II.b.ii.: Support students’ learning of appropriate technical language associated with mathematics, attending to both mathematical integrity and usability by learners.
