May 25th marks the one year anniversary of George Floyd's murder.
Although reports of hate crimes are down overall, there has been an increase in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans during the pandemic. Particularly disturbing is that many of the victims of these attacks are vulnerable elderly Americans.
As individuals and as a larger collective, we the teachers, administrators and employees of Beaumont say enough is enough. We recognize our responsibility to respond to the situation and help our students to both understand the issues at play and to create an equitable educational experience for all our students.
We created the presentation that follows and shared it with students during school and provided our students with a chance to share a message of support.
Although we at Beaumont think it is important to take action in response to the increased violence perpetrated against Asian American men and women, we also know that it is important to listen—especially to our students.
History shows us it is the young who both fight for freedom and demand action in ways that previous generations never thought possible. So what is it that our students are saying and feeling? What is it that they know? What are there messages of support?
Please, take some time to see what they have said and then think about what it is that each of us can do to be a part of making real progress.
