PHS Counselors believe that ALL students can be successful after high school. There are postsecondary options for every student.
We acknowledge that there are flaws in the college admission and standardized testing system. For more information, please read through the links listed on the left side of this page.
If you are choosing to apply to college, standardized testing can be a part of your admissions package - but it does not need to be, depending on the college you apply to. For example, all colleges in Maine are test optional or test blind (definitions below). We can help you/your student identify the options that are best for your individual application.
Portland Public Schools' High School Counselors are working to address the issues we see with standardized testing:
*PPS School Counselors: Test Blind Letter to Maine Colleges/Universities
*Ongoing professional development
*Individual academic planning
*Supporting students in their advocacy
We are committed to working for equity.
In addition, the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) has two relevant position statements:
Test Optional: If a student chooses to submit test scores then they will be considered as part of the admission package. However, schools that are test optional do not require test scores to be submitted. See the searchable database of test optional schools HERE. When considering whether or not to submit test scores, we recommend checking the testing score bands at collegedata.com. As always, we are happy to work with students individually to determine if submitting a score would be a benefit to their application.
Test Blind: Test scores will not be considered as part of admission, even if a student submits them. There are currently 85 institutions who are test blind, including all of the University of California schools. Full list HERE.
For the fall 2021 admissions cycle, there are currently 1,700+ four year colleges who do not require test scores as part of an admissions package - that is approximately 2/3 of four year colleges.
***It is incredibly important to ALWAYS research the testing policies of the schools you are applying to. For example, although some schools may be test optional for admissions, they could tie scholarship money to standardized test scores. As always, do your research and know that every school is different!***
FREE Test Prep
Let's Get Ready: Let's Get Ready is a national program dedicated to helping students receive high-quality test prep and college admissions support. Luckily, we have a branch of the program in Maine! The program is taught by college students from local universities, and students need to commit to meet with the student mentors at least one evening per week for an entire semester. Check their website or talk to your Counselor about signing up.
Khan Academy: Khan Academy has partnered with the CollegeBoard, maker of the SAT, to provide free, individualized test prep. Sign in and link your CollegeBoard account to have targeted prep based on your results on your PSAT. Or, you can take a practice exam directly on the site.
