Dear LCE Families,
We hope you had a wonderful weekend! Today we were excited to kick off our partnership with the Portage Fire Department, as some of our classrooms received lessons on fire safety. Over the coming weeks, the department will continue visiting and working with each grade level. Along with this, you may also notice officers from the Portage Police Department at Lake Center greeting students, handing out stickers, and engaging with our school community. This week we are also beginning our PACE lessons, a partnership with Education for the Arts. Each classroom will take part in weekly workshops focused on dance this fall, with theatre lessons returning in the spring. We are grateful for these valuable community partnerships and the opportunities they bring to our students.
Please remember that Wednesday, October 1st is Count Day. This is an important day when student attendance determines our official enrollment numbers, which directly impact school funding. It is essential that your child arrives on time and is present for Count Day. We understand that emergencies and illnesses can arise, and we will accommodate those situations as needed. If your child is absent or arrives late on October 1st, please contact our office.
Last week, we held our first Sailor of the Month drawing! Students have been earning blue SAILing tickets throughout the school day, and while many classes celebrate ticket milestones in their own way, once a month each classroom also draws a ticket for a special recognition. The selected student receives a certificate, has their picture taken, and gets to choose a reward such as visiting the school store, selecting a new book, or spending extra time with Orville. We are thrilled by the number of tickets given out during September and are so proud of our students for their positive choices—keep up the great work, Lake Center!
Finally, a reminder that Turtle Trot donation envelopes are due this Friday, October 3rd. Thank you for your continued support of Lake Center and all that you do to help make our school such a wonderful place for students. We look forward to another fantastic week together!
Please join us on Wednesday October 8th with Walk, Bike & Roll to School. Donuts with Grownups will be in the back from 8:00-8:30. We look forward to seeing you there!

There will be free meals for ALL students until September 30th. Due to budgetary uncertainty in Michigan, families who do not qualify for Education and Nutrition Benefits will have to start paying for their students’ breakfast and lunches in October.
Did you know that your student might qualify for free or reduced-price meals? The application only takes a few minutes to complete, and your information will be kept safe and confidential. Education and Nutrition Benefit applications are NOW available for this school year. All families are encouraged to apply online at https://portage.familyportal.cloud. PPS is seeking a new bond to finish the job at our elementary schools!
Voters will be asked to consider a $132.4 million bond proposal in the November election to finish replacing three of our oldest schools, modernize another, and update vital technology and services to serve PPS students for years to come, all with no increase in the 2024 millage rate
Why make this request? The COVID-19 pandemic upended supply chains, causing high inflation (especially building materials, equipment and labor) and construction delays.
Here is what the new bond would cover:
Build the new Amberly Elementary School and the new Angling Road Elementary School – the last two elementary buildings to be replaced.
Renovate Moorsbridge Elementary School.
Replace PCEC to support Community High School and Early Childhood Education.
Continue important updates to educational and safety technology.
Replace buses that have outlived their mechanical lives.
Request your absentee ballot online at mvic.sos.state.mi.us/AVApplication or plan to vote Nov. 4. You can learn more about the 2025 Bond at portageps.org/2025bond.
For the month of October we will be focusing on the character trait of Empathy. Students will focus on these lessons in their classroom, at recess, the cafeteria and at specials. The learning areas we will focus on are:
I can offer help to those in need.
I can try to see the perspective of others.
I can be aware of how others feel.
Upcoming Dates to be aware of:
10/8- Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day & Donuts with Grown Ups (before school)
10/14- PTO Meeting, 6:30 pm
Orville is excited to be back to school and working! He had a busy summer so we will take the next few weeks for him to adjust being back to work. An important reminder we are working on with students and staff is that when Orville is out walking on the leash, he should not be pet. We have scheduled time for him to have direct contact with students with trained staff members. If you see Orville in the building or outside, please feel free to give him a wave but avoid touching him. Thank you for your help in ensuring we keep Orville trained to help support students!
