The umbrella term 'practice research' frames a research field that exists across and beyond disciplines. It is a type of research where practice is the significant method conveyed in a research output. In practice research, intuitive, embodied, tacit, imaginative, affective and sensory ways of knowing find their expression in research outputs.

To be submitted in REF2029 all outputs must meet the REF definition of research: ‘A programme of investigation leading to new insights effectively shared’. Therefore CCI R&I are putting in place a programme of support and guidance on how best to document your practice. Below are examples of outputs submitted in REF2021 and the contextual information documents that accompanied their submission known as the 'Practice Research Template'. A similar approach is required for Multi-component Outputs.
