What will I study?
In Music you will be given tasks in each of the three main areas; listening, composing and performing.
How many pieces of coursework are required?
Performances
A solo performance (15%)
An ensemble performance (15%)
Compositions
Composition to a set brief (15%)
Free composition (15%)
● You will create two compositions (or arrangements), each based on a different area of study. You will be taught how to use Musescore and Sibelius Music Software to compose your pieces.
How many examinations will I take?
One exam, Listening and Appraising, will be taken in the summer term of Year 11 (40% of the final grade)
What percentage of my final mark is determined by coursework?
60%
When does the coursework have to be complete?
Both performances have to be recorded by Spring Term of Year 11
What qualities do I need to be successful?
The main qualities you will need are:
● a curiosity about how music is made
● an interest in writing and performing music.
What sort of teaching styles are typically used?
Students learn through doing, following a cycle of practical activity. They write their own pieces, using a wide range of IT, which are performed and recorded. Students then use their growing listening skills to refine and re-write their pieces – and the cycle begins again.
