What will I study?
The course will give you a great introduction to the main areas of Business. There are six core themes that you will learn about: business activity, marketing, human resources (people in the business context), operations/production, finance and influences on business e.g. laws, economics, government etc.
How many pieces of coursework are required?
None
How many examinations will I take?
There are two exams taken at the end of Year 11:
Paper 1: Business activity, marketing and people. 90 minute paper. (50%)
Paper 2: Operations, finance and influences on business. 90 minute paper. (50%)
What qualities do I need to be successful?
A positive, enthusiastic, can-do attitude.
Hard working and motivated.
An interest in business and the wider world.
The ability to make decisions, suggest solutions to problems and apply what you have learned to real businesses.
What sort of teaching styles are typically used?
We use a wide variety of techniques including individual activities, group work, presentations, discussions, video, case studies, ICT tasks etc. There is an emphasis placed on weighing up options and applying what you have learned to real business scenarios.
Is there anything else you think I should know about this subject?
Most of you will eventually work within a business and some of you will start your own businesses. Additionally, Business schools are central to all major universities, so gaining an understanding of business and developing your business skills is clearly going to be a benefit to you in the future.
In addition to building your knowledge of the six core areas of business we have carefully designed activities that will develop the transferable skills that employers tell us are so important. These include: leadership, teamworking, timekeeping, research, written and verbal communication, problem solving and negotiation.
