Frequently Asked Questions

You were wondering...?

Q: What is the cost of lessons?

A: Participation in the Elementary Instrumental Program is free.

Q: What instruments do you offer?

A: The band instruments we offer are flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, and percussion. The orchestra instruments we offer are violin, viola, and cello.

Q: Do you offer piano or guitar?

A: No. Unfortunately, these instruments have not historically been considered part of traditional orchestra or wind band ensembles.

Q: Where do I get an instrument?

A: Most people rent through Goulet and Co., but you are welcome to find one on your own, or apply to borrow one from the district. Please contact your child's teacher before purchasing an instrument so we can be sure that you purchase a quality product.

Q: What equipment and accessories are required for my child's instrument?

A: You can view a list of required accessories for each instrument on the Instrument Accessories page.

Q: Where can I buy accessories like shoulder rests, reeds, books, valve oil, etc.?

A: Middle Street Music in downtown Plymouth, The Music Box in downtown Plymouth, Music Unlimited in Kingston, or Music of the Bay in Wareham may have what you are looking for. It is always a good idea to call ahead to check if they have what you need. We strongly suggest you support our local music stores.

Q: When are lessons?

A: Lessons take place for 30 minutes during the school day. Please view your teacher's page for further information (click one of the tabs above).

Q: What is the difference between band and orchestra?

A: Orchestra is for string players (violin, viola, and cello). Band is for all other (non-string) instruments.

Q: What is the difference between band/orchestra ensemble rehearsals and lessons?

A: Everyone meets together before school once a week for band or orchestra to work as a large group and prepare for the concert. Lessons are during the day where teachers provide individualized instruction.

Q: When will band or orchestra begin?

A: You will be notified. In some cases, ensembles will begin in the first couple weeks of school. Others will begin mid-October or November. Please check your teacher's page (click one of the tabs above).
