Drawing - Syllabus
Aspiring artists of all levels will be taught the foundational principles of drawing, enabling them to create a diverse range of two-dimensional artworks. Through a combination of observational drawing and imaginative creation, students will apply the structural elements and principles of art. Furthermore, they will engage in both individual and group critiques to assess their work at various stages, fostering academic learning through hands-on activities and the use of art materials.
These classes are designed to provide an introduction to the arts that will give you stronger creative and artistic skills. Please note - this class is not a blow-off class or “easy A”. You will need to put time and effort into this class. I am a firm believer that people aren’t just born “good” at things, including art. For example; people aren’t born a “good” basketball player.
It takes hours of practice to develop those skills.
All skills, including art, are built with practice, opportunity, taking risks and more practice.
My goal is to allow you to learn new art techniques in a safe environment. You will learn how to see art and design all around you. While we brainstorm, think outside the box, and take risks we will learn together how to approach many challenges while learning new art skills.
I am excited that you are joining me on this new adventure! - Mrs. Gedert

Grading
Formative Assessments (Practice) 20% of your grade - practice, rough drafts, practice sheets, sketchbook work and quizzes. These assessments will represent 20% of a student’s final quarterly grade. These are due when they are due. No retakes! If students are excused from class, they will have the same number of days to submit the formative assessment for full credit.
Summative Assessments (Assessment of learning) 80% of your grade - major assignments, tests, final drafts, and final projects. Summative assessments provide measurable evidence of learning and will be counted as 80% of a student’s final quarterly grade. The test and project can be redone within 5 School Days for up to 80% of the total grade value. Students can only retake Summative Assessments if they score below 70%.
Missing assignments will be promptly marked with a M in IC or in GC.
As an educator, it is my job to assess students based on effort & growth. People often say, “but I am not good at art”, but the truth is, anyone can get good at anything with significant focus & effort. Mistakes are essential in art! It is the only way to learn & grow. Mistakes are welcome in my room. The learning happens, however, when students push themselves with the experience of their mistakes, allowing themselves to grow and improve their grades.
You are graded on effort, time on task, seriousness, willingness to work through mistakes and understanding.
Projects: Assignments will be teacher directed prompts. In these projects, students will be learning very specific skills. Creativity will be used, but in beginning levels, skill is paramount! Guidance will always be available to guide students to success. Most projects will be graded as a test score at 100 pts. Late projects will have points deducted. If students are absent, it is the students responsibility to look in Google Classroom to see what work they missed and review missing work with the teacher. Students will work at home to finish. Students get 1 day grace for each day absent working outside of class.
Late Work: Late summative projects will be marked down 10% EACH week past the due date.
Absences: YOU are expected to make up missing assignments on YOUR own time. Communication is key! Communicate with your teacher. You will need to schedule a time to come in to work on summative projects if you miss studio time. You will receive a 1 day extension per EXcused absence for make-up work with late penalty.
Critique & Reflection: An essential part of artistic growth is to get feedback and adjust work to push toward excellence. Students are expected to participate in and accept the constructive feedback given. This activity will be structured in a “conversation about art” format.
Thank you!
