000501: Health 9 or 000502: Health 9 Zero Hour

Grades 9 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

Health 9 is a student-centered class designed to provide students with the knowledge of health-related topics so they may make responsible decisions that lead to healthy habits for a lifetime. Students will take notes, create projects, participate in discussions, watch videos, and use technology to learn about topics including wellness, chemical use, nutrition, communication/relationships, sexual health, illness/disease, and mental health.

000503: Nutrition for Lifelong Health

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

In Nutrition for Lifelong Health, students will learn about where the foods we consume come from and how they’re produced, what actually makes certain foods healthier than others and why, nutrition for athletes, special dietary restrictions, how grocery stores, the food industry and the government affect food production and availability, how food environment affects choices, and nutritional influences in other cultures. Students in this class will utilize community resources, technology, and (of course) try new foods as a means to make the content applicable for those who are interested in learning more about nutritional needs and/or interested in pursuing a career within a medical or nutrition-related field.

000504: Leadership and Sports Psychology

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

Leadership and Sports Psychology will provide an opportunity for students to further develop their leadership skills as it relates to Sports and Life.   This course is perfect for any student/athlete that strives to be a leader within their program or any student who wants to impact others by becoming a better leader.  This course is designed to help all students develop a strong leadership foundation as it relates to being part of a team and ultimately, learning how to lead others.   Students will be challenged to reflect on their own leadership skills and they will be given tools to help them learn how to lead others in any setting.   This course will also look at psychological factors as it relates to sport.  This course will provide the tools on how to better handle adversity, staying disciplined, improving competitive mindset, and how to strive to become the best version of themselves.

000531: First Aid and CPR

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This course is designed to introduce students to introductory medical skills and common injuries that can occur during physical activity. This will include lessons on CPR, and first aid skills along with prevention and care for injuries through bandaging, splinting, taping, etc. This course would be a combination of classroom discussions and lab sessions where students would learn and practice different first aid skills and techniques. A CPR/AED and First Aid certification card will be offered at an additional cost to students who want to get their Red Cross certification. 

000553: Stress Management or 000554: Stress Management Zero Hour 

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This course will involve discussion of and participation in activities that will prepare students to cope with stress.  Understanding the typical causes and symptoms of teen stress will help you feel better about yourself and enable you to handle the "ups and downs" of life.  Topics of discussion will include: defining stress, communication, personality traits, relationships, anger management, depression, suicide, grief, time management, self-esteem, job stress and relaxation techniques.

000559: Chemical Health Awareness

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This class is a comprehensive study of all drug-related topics, focusing mainly on gateway drugs and substances that high school students might be exposed to. Drug laws/policies, historical significance of drugs, drug categories, addiction, and consequences of drug use will all be discussed. Guest speakers, papers, projects, notes, and videos will be used to learn about this topic.

Physical Education

001070: Girls Fitness 9

Grades 9 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This personal fitness class is for 9th grade girls only.  This course is designed to enable students to improve their overall fitness level through a variety of individual and group fitness activities and integrated technology. Units include: Pilates, weight lifting, yoga, body weight exercises, TRX, dance fitness, cardio kickboxing, and iPad apps. 

001073: Boys Fitness 9

Grades 9 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This personal fitness class is for 9th grade boys only.  The primary activities will include:  Strength Training, Speed & Agility Training, Cardiovascular Endurance, Core Development, and Aerobic Fitness. 

001076: Team Sports 9 or 001079: Team Sports 9 Zero Hour 

Grades 9 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This introductory physical education course focuses on daily participation and skill development within a team sports setting. Units include, but are not limited to: soccer, volleyball, basketball, football, softball, broomball, floor hockey, and any other team-based sport.  

001079: Individual Sports 9

Grades 9 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This introductory physical education course focuses on daily participation and skill development within an individual sports setting. Units include, but are not limited to: tennis, pickle ball, badminton, golf, Frisbee golf, archery, table tennis, and any other individual sport. Offered quarters 1 and 4.

001028: Lifetime Sports

This physical education course focuses on daily participation and continued skill development within an individual sports setting. Units include, but are not limited to: tennis, pickle ball, badminton, golf, Frisbee golf, archery, table tennis, and any other individual sport.

001044: Personal Fitness or 001046: Personal Fitness Zero Hour

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This course is designed to enable students to improve their individual fitness in the areas of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition through a variety of individual and group fitness activities and integrated technology. Students will be expected to be active every day. 

001048: Winter Recreational Sports

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This course provides an opportunity for students to improve their physical fitness through the following winter activities: table tennis, floor hockey, pickle ball, badminton, volleyball, basketball, broomball, downhill skiing, snowboarding, skating, curling, sledding, and other recreational activities. Activities may change according to the weather or instructor’s discretion. Students should plan on being outside most days.

001034-001037: Strength and Conditioning or 001038: Strength and Conditioning Zero Hour

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

Strength Training is a personalized fitness class that allows students to work out in our weight room according to each individual’s personal training goals. Prior lifting experience is not required since the course is designed to meet the needs of the beginner, as well as the experienced fitness enthusiast. 

**May be taken up to FOUR Times for credit while at PLHS**

110669-110672 Advanced Strength Training  -- New for 24-25 School Year

Grades 10-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

Advanced Strength Training is offered to 10th - 12th Grade students who want a more advanced level of Strength Training and a more challenging training program. This class is more advanced compared to our general strength training classes and students signing up for this class will be exposed to more advanced strength training exercises and programming.  This advanced class will have daily strength training workouts, including pre/post competition workouts, and mobility routines. 

**May be taken up to FOUR Times for credit while at PLHS**



001051: Outdoor Education

Grades 11-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

Outdoor Education is offered to 11th and 12th grade students who are interested in outdoor activities. Outdoor Education units include Archery, Fishing, Canoeing, Fire Starting, “Wheels” unit, Outdoor Cooking, and Target Games. Outdoor Education has permission for students to leave campus during a class period to take advantage of local area parks for various units. Students’ ability to drive to and from sites is important to be able to participate in all class activities.

001027: Advanced Team Sports

Grades 11-12 | Prerequisites: None | 0.75 credits

This competitive intramural physical education course is for juniors and seniors who want to be competitive, learn advanced strategy of the game and has a focus on winning/success. This is a fast-paced class for the ultimate competitor. Units include, but are not limited to: soccer, volleyball, basketball, football, softball, broomball, floor hockey, tennis, and any other team-based or doubles racket sports. Come ready to play!

Unified Physical Education provides a unique opportunity for students with and without disabilities to come together through ongoing educational and physical activities. The Unified Physical Education course is structured around the national physical education standards and grade-level outcomes, which include gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness. Additionally, the class supports the development of leadership skills for all students, and the empowerment of ALL students to foster an inclusive class and school-wide environment.
