Our choir classes are evaluated around participation and performance. Students will be evaluated as an individual as well as as a group and based on the areas below. Please note that we will follow the standard grading scale of E.B. Aycock Middle School. The entirety of the student’s grade will breakdown as follows:
Each day the students will start with 10 points
Points are roughly broken up as so for each day:
1 point for having music and binder
1 point for a pencil
1 point for no chewing gum or eating food while in class
1 point for being on time unless communicated to the teacher
6 points go towards participation and are deducted throughout class based on the student’s behavior
The student will receive zero points in participation for an unexcused absence if they fail to acquire make-up work from the teacher.
The student will be exempt if they have an excused absence and have notified Ms. K.
Ms.K reserves the right to deduct all points and/or remove the student from the class if said student is demonstrating continuous negative behavior or failing/refusing to participate in class.
Student attendance at ALL concerts is mandatory. We are not our choir if every member is not present. It is necessary to have every member so we can all show what we learned and worked on to the outside community. Failure to attend is an automatic zero, whether the student has an excused or unexcused absence.
Please communicate with Ms.K… She does not appreciate surprises! She is flexible with students if a situation occurs the week of the concert that causes the student’s absence or the excused absence is due to an unavoidable circumstance. Please see "Concert Expectations" for more!
Attendance at all performances is mandatory unless communicated with the director. These include both excused and unexcused absences that result in either a deduction of this portion of the student’s grade or an additional assignment/project to replace the grade.
“Performances” are separate from “Concerts” because we may have out-of-school performances that are more flexible with student attendance.
Concert attire is mandatory for all students at concerts and performances, unless directed otherwise by the director, the school, or the organization. Failure to wear attire at performances/concerts will result in a deduction of the students’ grade.
Attendance at all dress rehearsals is mandatory. The purpose of dress rehearsals is to address final specific musical and logistical aspects of upcoming performances. It is necessary to have all choir members, as we are a team and need everyone to hear our full and inclusive group sound.
The dress rehearsals will be scheduled throughout the year with at least two weeks notice.
If a student misses dress rehearsal for an excused absence, there will be an alternate assignment.
Failure to attend dress rehearsal, without communication with the director or an unexcused absence, will result in a zero for that rehearsal.
This will include assessments of sight-singing, music memorization, music marking, music theory, and individual/group class performance.
Ms.K will not make students perform by themselves unless they feel comfortable!
These assignments will typically be written and turned in during class as a reflection based question.
Written Assignments may include written assessments, worksheet materials, reflections, or online assignments.
Theory Assignments may include group or individual work to learn/master basic theory concepts.
We will always follow the NC Standard Course of Study for Choral Music.
Homework is heavily referred to as “practicing” in the music world and is an expectation of the students as it will help our choirs grow and increase productivity through classes.
Students first homework grade will be to turn in the forms in their handbook at the beginning of the year.
Students in choral music are expected to participate in all performances related to his or her class.
Only personal illness or a death in the immediate family are accepted excuses for missing a program, and these MUST be communicated with the director BEFORE the concert begins.
All conflicts with rehearsals and performances must be worked out ahead of time, in writing, with the director. Not all conflicts, even if put in writing, will be automatically excused if the director has given ample notice regarding the performance.
Missing a concert with an unexcused absence results in a grade of zero.
There is NO way to make up a LIVE concert performance!
