Concert Expectations

Any rehearsal may be graded.
Attendance at these rehearsals is required so that we can sing in harmony with proper blend and balance at our public performances.

Concerts are the culmination of your learning experience in chorus. Attendance and participation in winter and spring concerts performances are required. Each student will be evaluated and will receive a grade for each performance. A concert performance is like an exam given in public. There is no way to make up a public performance once it is missed. An un-excused absence for a concert is a zero.

Attendance will be taken at all concerts and rehearsals.

Your mouth must be EMPTY on stage during the concert. Water is the only fluid you are allowed to consume during a concert (Off-stage ONLY!).

Students are required to stay for the entire concert.

For an excused absence, the student must do the following BEFORE the concert date:

Submit a written request by parent/guardian at least one week in advance of the concert date. Absence requests will be reviewed by the director and possibly with the principal and or Fine Arts Department Chair as necessary for final decision as to whether or not to excuse the student.

Concert dates and information regarding rehearsals are published months ahead of time so families and individuals can make necessary arrangements in their schedules. If an emergency arises which will prohibit you from attending a concert, please inform the director as soon as possible. A note of explanation will be required, signed by a parent or guardian, within three days of the missed performance. In case of sudden medical emergency or death in the family, please call the director at your earliest convenience at 252-756-4181 (school) or email the director immediately. (Email is preferred.)

Students who have mastered the music by taking part in rehearsals will be allowed to participate in performances. Students who have not mastered the music through daily participation in class may not be allowed to perform. The person beside you in class really depends on you. Fulfill your responsibility to your fellow musicians. Come to school! Sing! Participate!

The selected concert attire is designed to enhance the visual aspect of your performance.

A chorus that is dressed uniformly lends dignity to the performance tradition and reflects the seriousness and dedication of the ensemble.

The selected concert attire is required for all public performances.

Students are responsible for making arrangements to assemble/purchase their concert attire by October 15th.

This means paying for anything that must be ordered or purchased on your own.
If you need financial assistance to purchase your performance attire, please let me know immediately. I cannot help you if I am not aware of your needs. Be sure you know where your concert attire is and that it is pressed and clean at least a week prior to performance.

Occasionally, when announced in advance, “dress-up” clothes will be requested rather than the traditional concert attire.
On these occasions, dresses or dressy slacks for girls, and dress shirt and tie with black slacks for guys would be appropriate.

Jewelry: No. Visible. Jewelry.
The only Bling should be your smiles and shiny shoes.

Asthma and allergies abound!.
Please DO NOT apply any fragranced products before the concert.

Please DO wear unscented (or undetectable) deodorant or body powder, and brush your teeth before the concert.

Disruptive concert behavior will result in a lowered concert grade and possible suspension of concert performance opportunities for that individual. Only following a parent conference and a period of observable improved classroom participation will concert privileges be restored.

♪ In General, performers should arrive to concerts with your entire outfit on. People are watching even before the concert starts.
We need to take a group picture before the concert starts. If you are not in full concert attire, you cannot be in the photo, and you are tardy!

♪ If you are borrowing clothes, be sure to arrive early enough to change clothes and experiment with a few different sizes if needed.

♪ Student conduct of the should enhance, not detract, from the musical performance.

♪ Performers will wear the full concert attire for the duration of the concert.

♪ Performers must wait quietly in the assigned “pre-staging” area until their turn on stage.
Students will not be allowed in the audience or in the lobby while other ensembles are performing unless they are assigned to do so.

♪ Non-chorus members are not allowed in the pre-staging area during the concert.

♪ ONLY Chorus students are allowed in the pre-staging area unless they are participating in the concert or assisting the director

♪ Secure all valuables, cell phones (turned off), purses, etc, with a trustworthy person or locked storage before going on stage.
