both ways save us from thinking” -Alfred Korzybski

Course Description

Theory of Knowledge is one of three core elements of the IB Diploma Programme that encourages critical thinking about knowledge itself. The intent of this course is not to teach content; instead, we will examine how we know what we know through discussions and various enrichment activities. We must make sense of our knowledge of the content areas as well as our beliefs outside of the classroom in order to strengthen our understanding of the world around us.

As a student, TOK should serve as a support for your other classes, and your other classes will support this course, as well. Nothing you learn and experience during your time in the Diploma Programme should be viewed in isolation, including the other two core elements of IB: CAS and the Extended Essay.

IB Core Assessments

Diploma candidates must pass all required elements of the Core: TOK, EE, and CAS in order to earn an IB Diploma. To complete TOK, students will be assessed in two forms:

  1. Essay on a prescribed title: 1600 words maximum on a prescribed title selected by the student from a list of six set by IB for each session. This will be worth 67% of the final TOK score and is externally assessed by the IB.

  2. Oral presentation: One 10 minute presentation that explores a real-life/contemporary situation from a TOK perspective. This will be worth 33% of the final TOK score and is internally assessed by the teacher using IB marking standards.
