Food Preparation and Nutrition

What does the course aim to do?
This new GCSE focuses on practical cooking skills to ensure that students develop greater understanding of nutrition, food provenance and the working characteristics of food materials.
What will I study?
1 paper worth 50% of the final grade
Non-exam assessments worth 50%
Task 1: Food Investigation (a 1,500 to 2,000-word report)
Task 2: Food preparation assessment (plan, prepare, cook and present a three course menu)
What would I enjoy about food preparation and nutrition?
This GCSE has a strong practical focus. Students will master a variety of technical skills and will become proficient in the kitchen. Students will also develop an in-depth knowledge of food science, food safety, food choice, nutrition and health.
Students will have the opportunity to explore a wide of cuisines and develop practical skills to meet the needs of specific groups.
Science based experiments will be used to support the understanding and delivery of food science topics within the specification.
Students will have the opportunity to prepare a 3 course meal which will then be served to an invited party.
What careers is it useful for?
Food preparation and nutrition promotes the development of a number of skills which can be transferable to many careers. These include; Product development, Marketing, Teaching, Health Promotion, Nursing, Dietetics, Restaurant Management, Corporate Management and a Chef.
How is it examined?
Paper 1 – 1 hour 45minutes 50%
NEA Tasks:
Food Investigation – 10 hours- 15%
Food Preparation Assessment- 20 hours- 35%
