Project Description: Design a personal-sized chocolate to highlight and celebrate your heritage using AutoDesk Fusion 360, 3D printer, and silicone plastique mold-making technique.
3D model (using Autodesk Fusion 360), and fabricate (using a 3D printer) a single serving-size piece of chocolate. Your chocolate will be round with a 2.5” diameter and 0.25” thickness.
The theme of this project is My Heritage. Use this project to share about you, your family, and your heritage so that we can celebrate the diversity of our class. Your design should have many hints and details that tell us more about you and your family. A simple flag won’t work.
Your chocolate will have a design on one side; the bottom face is left flat for mold-making.
My partner for this project is Lund, and he will do most of the brainstorming and come up with the design, and I will cad the design in fusion 360 and print it.
Brainstorming
Knowing what Lund wants in this project, I decided to include a Paifang, a lantern, his Chinese name, and a yin and yang. For my brainstorming, I mainly shuffled the objects around that I wanted to have, and try to find a design that would be organized and be unique.
Designs 1, 2, and 3 below
Designing the project
For the design, I used fusion 360 to create the project. For the lanterns, I simplyfied it and removed all the small details. For the yin and yang, for each side to show, I made one part smaller than the other because you can not print it and have it different colors. The pai fang worked out and everything fit perfectly.
I also had to adjust the measurements later because I learned that its maximum height is 0.25 inches, so I made the base 0.15 inches and the decorations 0.1 inches.
This is my first 3d print prototype. After talking with Ms. Tran, I found out i could make my Yin and Yang smaller, my Pai Fang bigger, and the lanterns and characters had to be a lot bigger to be visible on the chocolate.
I think that the design is organized and if it is improved with the measurements and sizes, it could be my final design.
This is my second design on Fusion 360. I adjusted the Yin and Yang, I made the Pai Fang bigger, and I tried to make the lanterns bigger, but I couldn't find a way to get them the same size, so the one on the left is smaller than the one on the right. I also made the characters bigger, but I couldn't find a way to center them and make them fit perfectly.
This is my second printed design. i am happy with how it turned out, but the characters could be extruded a bit more so it can be more visible.
This is my design in the mold. I couldve done a better job with the wall and the mold entirely.
This is my design, I am going to redo the silicon mold because it turned out poorly. It had air holes, the walls were towering over the design, and there was a part that was extruded near the bottom of the design.
This is my final mold. Everything worked out, but there was a tiny hole near the top right, so I patched it up. I am satisfied with how it turned out, and now I will start the chocolate process. The designs were clear, the mold was even, and the walls didn't tower over the design.
This is my final product. The chocolate turned out pretty well, but some of the chocolate spread over the mold and some of it got ripped off. Overall, I think this will be my design that I turn in, and I will make another design to eat.
Soul Reflections:
Strengths - My work on my Fusion 360 design was effeciant because I had time to print 3 versions, and I could make improvements and fix problems while having time. I finished super quickly, so I could improve my model and fix the flaws.
Opportunities - If I could've started the mold process faster, I could've perfected my mold instead of being rushed and hoping on one good design instead of choosing between two.
Understanding - I understood how to cad the project and I think I did my design pretty well, but the molding part was a lot harder for me to understand because I would constantly mess up on it.
Limits - My silicon mold failing was one of my biggest limits because it caused me to get it right the net time, or I will fail the project because it won't be done in time.
WISCR
W- I think I was pretty well rounded in this project because I could CAD it, I communicated with Lund pretty well, and overall I worked productively and quickly. I did the design effeciently and I did everything that Lund asked for.
C- I think I was a clear communicator because Lund and I communicated well and clearly because we told each other what we wanted and what needs to be changed without any disagreement or problem. We did everything that we could do and are satisfied and happy with how the proeject turned out.
Lund went with design 3, and asked for the yin yang to be smaller, and to remove one paifang.
