Description: This project was to design a soap mold for a soap dedicated to someone we appreciate. You are given the option to use either Fusion 360 or Tinker CAD code blocks. The project must be 3X3 inches and 1.5 inch maximum. It should also symbolize the person you are giving the soap to.
Brainstorming: The first step of designing the soap is the brainstorming where we draw our designs on procreate. I thought of dedicating my soap to my mom and younger brother who are fond of the adorable and energetic monkeys (plus the delicious bananas) which is also what inspired me to make a monkey as my soap. My message/catchy tag line is "Let's Monkey Around" representing the playful spirit of this animal and how it reflects onto our family, fun and loving. For my research, I seached up cute cartoon monkeys and took inspiration from one image to create a original sketch of the monkey i had in my head.
Prototypes: This project was trial and error meaning many prototypes. My first prototype was too small vertically, so for my second prototype/final one, I remodeled the monkey to make it fit the scale requirements. To create the soap design in the first place, I first brainstormed a design, then moved the png image of my sketch onto Fusion 360. Next, I used a tool to sketch the shape of the image and then extrude it to give it volume. I did this for every part of the monkey. After I was done, I printed the first prototype which was scaled incorrectly, so I modified the design on Fusion. I moved te head upwards and drew a body connecting the newly raised head. Finally, I printed it, and the prototype was complete. After the final prototype had been printed, I used a putty-like substance to create a mold.
S- The strength of my work is the monkey design, as it required intricate and detailed sketches for each part of the original brainstormed sketch. I was also able to work efficiently, finishing my final soap design in only the second prototype.
O- Some opportunities to improve are to make sure all the dimensions are met before extruding everything. This will help save me a lot of time.
U- During this project, I learned how to use a specific tool in Fusion 360 to create really intricate sketches. I also understood how to create a mold with two putty-like substances to create a chemical reaction and harden it. I also learned to print to a 3D printer since I forgot how to do that.
L- I didn't really encounter any limitations except for the fact that the original place I wanted to place my catchy tag line was too small meaning the text couldn't print properly, but I ended up just not adding it.
WISCR: I would say I applied the W (well-rounded) in WISCR during this project. I was able to work efficiently, create a challenging design, finished my final soap design on just the second prototype, and sketch the design onto Fusion 360. I learned a lot during this project and I feel like I gave my best effort on making my soap design look its best. I think I also applied the I (insightful critical thinker) in WISCR because in the beginning, my soap design didn't fit the size requirements in the beginning, but instead of completely restarting, I just moved the head upwards to increase the vertical size of the soap and efficiently resolved the issue.Â
