Description: For this project in Computer Science 8 we were tasked to create meaningful designs for soap. I decided to create a soap for my mom, find something that she likes, and create it. I decided to create a latte soap with a heart, and a catchy phrase that says "I love you a latte".
Brainstorm: Some of the things my mom likes is coffee, avocados, and noodles, and in the end I decided to do a latte soap, with a heart in the middle and a small message. I got this idea because I knew she liked to drink coffee, and we often go to coffee shops together, so I wanted to create something meaningful. At first I was thinking coffee cup style like Starbucks, and then I realized that a coffee cup with art would look better. Then I wanted a catchy phrase, so I chose "l love you a latte".
Quick sketch about my ideas, the coffe cup next to the real sketch was what I was originally thinking. Not the best artist, but this is an idea of what I was thinking.
Image I used to trace the heart, it had the same idea as what I was thinking to do.
Procedure: Then I researched different images of latte art, deciding which ones I would use to trace the image. I knew I wanted to create a heart, so I already had an idea of what type of design I wanted to do. After deciding what latte art image I would use to trace, I used my knowledge of Fusion 360 tools to create a cup. Using the revolve, extrude, and move feature, it made the creation of the cup a lot easier. I only had to sketch half the cup, and revolve it, and then I selected the face of the cup to draw the sketch. I traced the photo of the latte art, and added a curved text to the side. Doing the Fusion360 object was easy, as I had a lot of practice from Design and Engineering 8, but making the mold was the hardest part and took a lot of time. At first, Ms. Tran gave me the idea to make a cardboard box and hot glue all the sides together well so that none of the mold would leak. I spent a full class making the box of cardboard, and stuck the 3d printed fusion 360 model inside of it without touching the sides. I added a cork as a funnel to make it easier to pour the soap into the mold later. After the mold, we cut the mold three ways to get the fusion model out, and then we made sure that it wouldn't leak by keeping it together with 2 clamps. It still leaked but when we added pieces of wood it worked.

My fusion 360 sketches: side view
the cork was cut off when we took the mold out of the cardboard box,
This is the mold I used, it had to be different because I decided to do a cone like shape, which couldn't have been done with a regular mold. It was a lot more complex, and was especially ahrd to get out when the wax for the soap dried because of the handle, and because it was so fragile.
This is the final versions, the one on the left was the first version, its lopsided because one side was slowly leaking, and the one on the right is the real one, the better one because it wasn't leaking. The handle is lopsided because when taking out the mold it was too fragile and broke, so we heated the sides and glued it together.
Reflection - SOUL:
S (Strength of your Work) - I would say my biggest strength was my knowledge of fusion. I knew all the tools already from DE8 so I made my model in one day, but then the rest of the mold making and soap took longer for me because I had a harder object, and I wish I could have had more time to do it.
O (Opportunities to improve your project) - I wish I could have been better at making the mold, and I wish I had made the handle better and thicker so it wouldn't have broken off. I also wish that I could have added color because I thought the first model was a prototype when it was leaking.
U (Understanding) - I have learned it takes a lot to make a complex 3d soap, and making a circular soap base is easier. Communication is also important because I thought you only wanted me to come in on Monday and I thought it was fine and didn't realize it was due on Wednesday.
L (Limitations you encountered in this project) - I think if I had even one or two more classes, I could have really perfected this, and I say this almost every time, but I always feel like I can perfect this. I feel like if we started mold making earlier it would have been better for me because the mold making was what took the longest, but for others its the shortest.
WISCR:
Well-Rounded Individuals- During this project, I noticed I never stopped learning. I demonstrated being well roundedness by using different skill I had learned in DE8.
Self-motivated Individuals - I spent a lot of effort and time on this project. I didn't give up when making the mold, and even when the gallery walk was over, I still wanted to make sure the handle could stick.
