Description : Design and create a pair of animal fugurines utilizing recycled bottle corks. Students design on tinkerCAD and prototype using the 3D printers. The design process consists of brainstorming, researching, CADding. 3D printing, and repeating until the students are happy with their final products.
Brainstorm :
My inspiration for the animal I chose for my cork pals project is from one of my favorite stuffed animals that I have matching with my good friend. I used resources like examples of past made cork animals that were also pigs and used their ideas to think of something of my own. The significants to this animal is actually from one of my favorite stuffed animals that I share a pair with along with my friend. The message my design conveys is the hard work I put into redesigning my animal. This is because I forgot the legs to my cork pals project and I only realized once the design was actually printed. For the cow, my inspiration was just found my admiring the work from the others listed on the examples column. All my resources are from the cork pals instruction manual and the agenda provided by Ms. Tran.
The little background story for my two animals : Once upon a time there were two barn animals. Carson the pig and Bessy the cow. The two were in love, however they were not able to tell their friends or family because of being different animals. "those pigs are the peasants of our barn" said Bessy's father. " All they do is play in the mud and get things dirty. They don't have ANY class" Bessy couldn't help but think about her one true love, Carson. Because of coming from different families of different animals, they felt like they couldn't be themselves in public. All they could do was spend time together at school where they enjoyed doing math problems and drawing in the dirt. One day Carson had an idea... "hey Bessy, so I was thinking and what if we ran away from the barn? Think about it! We would have so much fun us two playing in the meadows and swimming in the lake, doing math problems till the sun comes up and drawing till the sun goes down. If we escaped we wouldn't have to worry about other animals in the barn judging us! We could just be ourselves, nothing more, nothing less." Bessy agreed and they made a plan to run away at dusk. The next day they gathered their things, and set off. Together they ran off into the wild, waiting for the adventures ahead.
Procedure :
CREATING THE RING :
the first step is to create a ring based off of Ms Trans instructions and measure the width of the cork to apply it to the ring
Then, print the ring off of flash print and make sure there is no raft on
Plug in the USB and place the file inside it
Bring that USB to the 3D printer when it is you're turn to print
Wait the proper amount of time and then take you're ring out when it is ready
Check to see if the ring fits and if it does if it does not then take the time to make the amount of changes that needs to be done
If so figure out how you can fix the sizing by re measuring and asking Ms Tran to clarify.
For the pig and the cow
Take the measurements on both sides of the cork
Place two cylinders for each end of the animal
Put a hole inside both of them but make sure not to push it all the way through, so it can be secure and the tail can stay there
To the front side of the corks cyliner and add two eyes from the circle tool
Add a nose after and adjust the size based on what you're animal is
Add any smile or expressions you would like for you're animal
Make ears for you're animal using the triangle shape for the bunnny ears ( for the cow I used bunny ears to make it look like horns ) or any shape provided that looks like it can be morhped into what you need
On the backside add a tale by using the swiggle tool to draw it yourself, that way you can get the exact shape you want/need
Export the file onto a USB and put it into flashprint
Add support to the content like the head, legs, and ears
make sure the raft is not on and bring your USB to the printer
select the color you want to print in and print your design
Attached at the very bottom is pictures of my original ring, what it looked like before I printed it on tinkerCAD, and what the finish product looked like
Reflections
Strength - The design of my cow came out perfectly on the first try. I like how I was able to improvise by using bunny ears to create horns
Oppurtunities to improve your project - If I were given the chance, I would fix my pigs backside's leg. This is because although it is still able to stand on its own, its still quite easy to fall. I would like to make the legs thicker so it has better balance.
Understanding what you learned through this project - I learned that it is extremely important to manage my time properly for future this is because I didn't manage my time properly and I left finishing my portfolio till the very end when the deadline is tonight. Having more time would make me less stressed out and allow me to be flexible on when to finish.
Limitations you encountered in this project : Time, as I said above I did not manage my time properly and I did learn from it. At the end I did feel like time was grappling at my soldiers and I was limited till the deadline. If I had more time I would be able to finish making my legs for the pig and make it thicker so it would be more stable. This could result into a better grade and being more proud of myself.
WISCR
clear communication : I was able to clearly communicate my work through images like the ones taken below. I made sure I took pictures every major step of the way, so my audience would be able to understand my work better.
Self motivation : Although it was hard with the amount of time I was given, I was still able to pursue finishing my project. Originally the head of my pig didn't fit, however there was only one lesson left to fix it and finish this portfolio along with the self evaluation. I made sure I got my work done by working with the teacher 1 on 1 to fix the sizing and to see what I did wrong.
