Summer Opportunities

Tell us about a place in Allegheny County that is important to you. Briefly explain

If you can answer this question in an essay of between 500 and 1,500 words and

meet the eligibility criteria below (see attached), then you may apply for this scholarship to help

pay your tuition and book expenses at a college/university of your choice.

Students can choose from a variety of on-campus learning opportunities that fit best with their busy summer schedules. Whether you’re interested in applying to Wake or not, the Summer Immersion Program is a great way to experience life on a college campus and Wake Forest could be a great place to discover the major or career pathway that’s right for you.

The dynamic world of health care plus the expertise of University of Pittsburgh academics and facilities. This educational mixture shapes a unique, academically rigorous, hands-on campus experience for students attending the Health Career Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) each summer. 5-week program in regenerative medicine research and scientific investigations.

The Wiegand Summer Internship provides an opportunity for a current high school senior who resides in the following counties:, and will be graduating in the spring of 2024 to spend four to five weeks learning first-hand about regenerative medicine research and scientific investigations in general. The outline of the program is as follows:

Southwest Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center (AHEC) holds an annual Summer Health Career Academy.  The academy is designed for current ninth and tenth grade students who are interested in learning about opportunities in various health careers and the academic preparation necessary for these careers. Students meet with and talk to practicing health care professionals, engage in health career activities, learn to monitor vital signs, engage in hands on medical procedures, learn basic medical terminology, and receive training in leadership skills.  Applications for the 2023 Summer Session are still open! The Learning for a Greener Future internship program offers a variety of work experiences, classes, community service projects and field trips in the diverse fields of environmental and plant sciences. Throughout the program, interns work with Phipps' skilled science education and horticulture staff, college interns and volunteers, as well as experts from Pittsburgh's environmental community. The Pennsylvania School of Excellence in the Agricultural Sciences:
July 9th to August 4th

Interested in sciences like sustainability, the environment, biomedicine, food systems, traditional agriculture, or anything in between? Are you an academically talented upcoming high school senior? The immersive Pennsylvania School for Excellence in the Agricultural Sciences is a special program for students just like you.

The PSEAS four-week residential summer program, held primarily at University Park, takes a deep—and fun—dive into the ag sciences and Penn State programs. Take advantage of the opportunity to live on campus, try out college courses, and meet fellow students from across the Commonwealth. 

All students accepted into the program attend for free. Thanks to generous grants from the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences, tuition, room-and-board fees, and instructional materials are all included.

University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy:
June 25th - July 22nd

Application Deadline: February 22nd

Come spend four weeks on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh exploring the world of health care. Through hands-on experiences, guest speakers, group discussions, team projects and presentations, simulations, and multiple site visits you will gain behind the scenes look at the life of a health care professional. Students also gain an understanding of professional expectations and behavior.

Classes: Six or seven Learning Teams are offered each summer with topics such as Introduction to Neuroscience, Alternative Medicine, and Hippocrates in Court. The topics vary each summer. The teams create and present two group projects.

Iacocca Global Entrepreneurship Intensive:
June 25th - July 22nd

Early Decision Application Deadline: February 19th

During this intensive summer experience from Lehigh University’s Iacocca Institute, international and U.S. high school students come together for dynamic learning opportunities, workshops and design labs, a team project with a real client organization, and visits to companies and start-ups. Within the entrepreneurship intensive, students will pursue a “deep dive” in a focus area such as Sustainability, Technology, Population Health or Business. The curriculum includes faculty from across the university and throughout the worldwide Iacocca Institute network, as well as collaboration with Lehigh’s Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation.

Magee-Women's Research Institute Summer Internship: A paid opportunity to participate in basic, translational, or clinical scientific research for students interested in a biomedical career.

During the 4-week program (160 total hours) each student will have the opportunity to work on their own research project under the guidance of an investigator and their staff at MWRI or Magee-Women's Hospital. In addition, students will attend informal Lunch & Learn sessions, during which investigators will discuss biomedical science as a career from their personal perspectives and journeys in the field.

At the end of the program, students present their research findings via a PowerPoint presentation to other participants as well as to the MWRI faculty and staff at the annual High School Internship Presentation Day. The Institute includes basic, translational, and clinical faculty researchers from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, as well as from other departments at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The Summer Session curriculum is comprised of undergraduate-level Carnegie Mellon courses. The courses are the same ones taken during the fall and spring by Carnegie Mellon students, usually in their first year or as sophomores. At iD Tech Camps, students ages 7–17 unleash their creativity with the hottest courses in coding, game development, robotics, and creative arts.  Instructors from Disney, Bethesda Softworks, Google, and EA teach classes of no more than 10 students give meaningful instruction in recognition of the skills students already have while adding new skills to students' portfolios. Each year, Pitt Cyber, in partnership with Pitt Information Technology, hosts the Air Force Association CyberCamp. This week-long camp is free and open to high school students from the Pittsburgh area and teaches cybersecurity principles and future career opportunities. The free camp is designed for a range of technical skill levels, including introductory digital literacy, and is focused on cyber ethics and systems security.
