In this hands-on learning workshop, middle and high school students worked with theatre professionals on playwriting, set design, props, directing, costumes, hair and make-up, lighting, stage management, acting, movement, and/or stage combat. School groups rotated through four different workshops in the Byham Theater over the course of the day.
The Theatre Arts Workshop provides insight into the theatre profession: a field full of creative and exciting careers. Students and educators alike learn skills that can be applied to life inside and outside of the theatre during their experience in the iconic Byham Theater. Every single student 'sung' the praises of the entire day!
Pine-Richland students interested in pursuing a medical career were able to tour the UPMC Biomedical Labs earlier this month. They learned from experts in the field about possible careers in medical laboratory and testing positions, how the labs support physicians and specialists, and just how much effort it takes to manage an organization as large as a hospital system.
Students were treated to full explanations as to how new technologies take time to implement and plan for, however they are many times faster and more precise than the technology that predates them.
Pine-Richland High School participated in the annual TSA TEAMS competition this year in higher numbers than ever before! Teams submitted an in-depth essay supporting their suggestions for a hotel complex that would withstand challenging weather conditions. On the day of the Competition, students also completed high level math and science questions in a multiple-choice exams. Next they came to the main attraction, designing and building a structure on top of stilts that would withstand various speeds of 'wind' from a high-tech box fan.
This competition challenges students to step out of theory and move into production of their ideas. Students learn to fail fast and how quickly they need to recover to succeed; mimicking real life and what they can expect to find in their careers.
Pine-Richland High School’s mock trial team captured first place and two individual awards in the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral Classic Mock Trial Tournament in early January. Senior John Folino was named Exceptional Witness, and ninth-grader Piya Dargan was named Exceptional Lawyer. The first-place winning team includes junior and senior lawyers Sanika Das, Brooke Deegan, Ian Hurt, Nedda Immen, Eliza Lazzaro and Deeya Nayyar; and witnesses JoJo Barbiaux, Anna Karmanos, June McCune, Ava Muster, William Tamburri, and Jillian Uzelac. The team will represent Pine-Richland at the annual Pennsylvania Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament.
