sparking curiosity
GATE students in all grades have been spending Fridays in the Think Tank working on independent or small group maker projects. They were given a choice of activities including Sphero (coding), origami, paper circuits, knitting (or crocheting), stop motion animation, or maker machines. After being introduced to all of the options the student had one day to tinker with their chosen activity. They then had to draft a plan for their project and learn the skills needed to complete their projects. Collaboration was encouraged. On showcase day the students shared their creations and reflected on their plan, their challenges, and their successes.
Check out a small sample of the projects created by our Eden Hall GATE students.
creating connections
Fourth grade student Lily R. won a PTO's gift of time raffle and was invited to read to Mrs. Shenefiel's dog, Millie. Lily invited her friend Tallulah H. to be her guest, and after school in December the students stayed to read to Millie. Millie and the girls played hide and seek in the library, ran some agility obstacles, and of course read together. Millie was captivated as Lily and Tallulah read Fancy Nancy: Ooh La La! It's Beauty Day by Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser. Lots of treats were had (by Millie) and a good time seemed to be had by all.
empowering learners
What started out as two volunteers for a special project at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year has transformed into a dedicated team of student library volunteers. Most of the students are in sixth grade but there are a few fifth graders as well. When their schedule allows the students come to the library during Explore to help with tasks such as stratghtening shelves, reshelving books, and delivering book holds. The student volunteers also help with special projects like library displays, shifting books or processing new books. Mrs. Shenefiel hopes to expand the volunteer team by opening it up to more students and by offering formal training on the tasks.
Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost didn't set out to make history. But when these three Black first graders stepped into the all-white McDonogh No. 19 Public School in New Orleans on November 14, 1960, that's exactly what they did.
