Students tinker and build STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) projects in the Think Tank. Projects included Little Bits, Sphero, or Maker Cart activities, among others. Students learned about the engineering design process as well as how to safely and responsibly use Think Tank materials and tools.
Students learned the art and skill of creative computing by using Scratch and to design, create, and share electronic games, stories, and animations. This is a beginner level club. Click the picture to view the project or check out our entire Scratch Project Gallery!

Students learned about non-fiction text features, paraphrasing, and citing books by creating their own mini-books. After choosing a non-fiction book on the topic of thier choice students used a single sheet of paper to build and design their own non-fiction mini-books. In addition to the skills above we also discussed book/page design and students were encouraged to apply some of the same strategies as publishing companies when designing their pages. This lesson connects with the ELA teachers third quarter goal which focus on non-fiction text.
empowering learners
A Student Library Advisory Club was formed to provide students a voice in library operations and improvements. Students brainstormed a variety of ideas, from improving the decor and adding plants, to installing a trampoline and adding a slide from the second story overlook. After a discussion about balancing time, effort, and cost, the advisory club has settled for the moment on improving the hallway display case, seasonal decorations in the library, creating plant sculptures, and adding creation stations (mini-maker projects.)
The library advisory committee is composed of 12 students in all grade levels. The committee meets bi-monthly during Explore.
