empowering learners
Fourth grade lessons have focused on library literacy and understanding the basics of using Eden Hall library. Students have learned about the layout of our physical library space and RAMS Way expected behaviors. They have also begun to learn about using our virtual spaces, including the EHUE Library website and Destiny. The ultimate goal in grade 4 is for students to become independent and know what resources are available through our library, how to locate them, and how to use them. Review our Grade 4 library lessons here.
During our biweekly library classes, fifth grade students are focusing on creating meaning from information found in sources. We have just begun an author investigation and the students will be reading and researching an author in order to gather information about that authors life and writing. We will then be using that information to create a project. Visit the grade 5 library lessons page to learn more.
Most grade 6 classes visit the library every two weeks for either a book exchange, a library lesson or both. Library lessons vary in topic depending on the need of the teacher or curricular projects that are happening in classroom. Aquatics classes have visited for hands-on projects relating to social studies including the irrigation system design challenge. Desert classes have been focusing on digital citizenship and learning about managing their gmail. Both Grasslands and Forest biomes have been learning about copyright, and Creative Commons licensing as it related to both creators and consumers of information. See our Grade 6 library lesson page here.
creating connections
Grade 4 Desert students learned about electicity and circuits in science class. They then came to the Think Tank first to tinker and then to design a battery operated Wiggle Bot following the engineering design process. The student created either Scribble Bots or Racing Bots.
sparking curiosity
Book Club Frenzy has become a much anticipated event that happens several times a year in almost every grade 5 class. The teachers schedule book club frenzy and, if desired, set a theme for the event. When the students arrive on their Frenzy day they find at least 35 different titles on the tables. Each book title receives a quick book talk and a recommendation. Before the students leave they choose at least three different titles that they would be willing to read for a book club. After the books are assigned the students will meet weekly to participate in guided discussion led by the teachers and parent volunteers.
sparking curiosity
On September 21, 2023 the Eden Hall PTO, in collaboration with the Eden Hall library, hosted the summer reading breakfast for 88 students who participated in the Summer Reading Program. Any student who either completed a Book Bingo Card or created a summer reading poster was invited.
All students recieved a certificate and a prize bag from the PTO, including a gift certificate for the fall book fair. Seven students completed a full bingo card and were treated to an extra reward of either a book or a poster. Thank you to the Eden Hall PTO, especially Mrs. Heinauer, and Sodexo for making this annual event a success.
These new nonfiction resources were selected to support the Eden Hall curriculum and the voluntary inquiry of our grades 4-6 students.
