sparking curiosity
In an exciting collaboration between the library and the grade 5 ELA teachers, all fifth graders took part in a Beach-themed "book tasting" event in the LGA and library! Students arrived eager to browse tables overflowing with library books sorted by genre, sampling each one to find stories that sparked their curiosity. They recorded the titles and genres of books that grabbed their attention, creating personalized reading lists. Since then, students have been returning to the library with these lists, ready to discover their next favorite read. Some fifth-grade classes have even made this a regular part of their reading journey.
creating connections
To kick off the Riverstone Book Fair, Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue visited Eden Hall to promote their exciting new book, Katie the Catsitter: The Purrfect Plan. They started the day with a whole group presentation, where they shared fun stories about their creative process and how they brought Katie and her furry friends to life. The students loved hearing about the adventures of Katie and her cats, and they even got to ask questions! After the presentation, Colleen and Stephanie held an author signing in the library. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with these talented authors and celebrate the joy of reading! Thanks to Riverstone Books and the Eden Hall PTO (especially Mrs. F.) for sponsoring and organizing the visit.
empowering learners
Fourth grade library lessons are all about building library skills and exploring Eden Hall’s resources! Students have been learning about the library layout, RAMS Way behavior expectations, and how to navigate our virtual tools like the EHUE Library website and Destiny catalog. The goal is for students to become independent users who know what resources are available, how to find them, and how to use them effectively.
So far this year, grade 5 students have explored personal strengths, learned about new books like The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich, and participated in the library's "Spotlight On..." program. The book fair and an author visit added extra excitement to their reading journey. In the second quarter, students will be learning about using nonfiction texts to investigate topics and answer questions.
Grade 6 classes visit the library every two weeks for book exchanges, library lessons, or sometimes both! These lessons cover various topics based on classroom projects and teacher requests. Recently, our Aquatics classes enjoyed hands-on social studies projects, like the irrigation system design challenge.
The Eden Hall PTO and library celebrated summer readers in style on September 20, 2024. Eighty students who completed a Book Bingo Card or made a reading poster enjoyed a special breakfast and received certificates and prize bags. Fifteen lucky readers even won $15 Riverstone Book Fair gift cards, and full Bingo card finishers earned an extra prize—a book or a poster! A huge thanks to Mrs. H., the Eden Hall PTO, and Sodexo for making this annual celebration memorable for our enthusiastic readers!
