College Visits & Opportuntities
College admissions representatives will visit PLP throughout the school year. This is a great opportunity for students to ask their questions directly to an admissions representative and/or learn more about colleges they might be interested in.
To see who is coming to our school:
Log into Naviance
Look for the "What's New" tab on the right-hand side of the page. Upcoming college visits will all be posted there.
You can also view a list of all college visits scheduled by clicking "Colleges" at the top of the screen. Under "Research Colleges," click "College Visits."

What do I do if my recommender does not work at PLP?
If you are choosing to send an additional recommendation from someone that does NOT work at PLP, you can add them in your Common App account and have them submit their letter via Common App or directly to each university you apply to
We recommend you get at least 1 recommendation from a CORE teacher at PLP. After speaking with that teacher, you will add them as a recommender in Naviance.
What is FERPA and how do I answer the questions in this section?
FERPA is the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act. By signing this you are agreeing to allow PLP to send your educational records (Transcript, etc.) to the schools you are applying to. We STRONGLY encourage that you waive your right to view recommendations. Most staff will not complete your recommendation unless you waive your right to view it.
Complete the FERPA Waiver in your Common App. Account (Located on the "Assign Recommenders" tab.)
Once complete, log into your Naviance account. Click "Colleges" -> "Colleges I'm Applying To". Click "Match Accounts" located in the red banner at the top of your page. This will allow all documents (transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc.) to be sent directly to your Common Application schools electronically.
Official transcripts for college applications will be sent electronically through Naviance.
All seniors will receive an unofficial copy of their transcript during their senior meeting. This will be an opportunity for students to ensure all information is accurate and use as a resource for any colleges that want you to self-report.
If the schools you are applying to require a letter of recommendation, consider who you will ask to write one for you. Most colleges will ask you for a letter from a CORE teacher. (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) Think about teachers that know you well, can speak to your engagement in the classroom, and can help show college admissions officers who you are as a person and potential student on their campus. You will also need a counselor statement completed for you, in addition to any letters written by teachers.
Once you've identified who to ask, go ask them in person. Consider providing your recommender with a resume and list of activities, along with a brief description of schools you are applying to, future goals, etc. You should also complete the documents below to assist your recommenders with their writing.
Teacher Recommendation: LOR Form
*Students can submit their college applications WITHOUT recommendations and transcript requests complete. School documents are sent separately and will be completed prior to all college deadlines.
NC Residency is a step in the application process for any student that is looking to apply to colleges and universities in the state of North Carolina. Scholarships & Financial Aid
It is important to understand financial aid and the different ways to help pay for college. Do not forget to look at the colleges you are looking to apply to and what types of financial aid they provide. You want to make sure you are taking steps to be considered for any scholarships and financial aid that is available. Many schools offer merit-based scholarships
There are many national search engines that will help you search for scholarships that meet your specific profile. Be cautious - you should NOT have to pay for this service. Please make sure you are using a verified and established website.
Local Scholarships are scholarships specific to a smaller group of students. These scholarships are specific to PLP, Mecklenburg and Iredell Counties, the Lake Norman area, etc. When thinking local scholarship's, consider jobs (both student and parent place of employment), local community organizations, etc. Anytime we receive notification about local scholarships, we will email out to seniors via their student email.
