ST 1.8

Self-Assessment Rating: 3

STEM learning outcomes demonstrate students’ STEM literacy necessary for the next level of STEM learning and for post-secondary and workforce readiness.

Starting with our youngest students in Kindergarten through our oldest students in eight grade, Pinecrest St. Rose monitors our student's proficiency and growth through multiple data point. We assess all of our students three times a year in reading and math through Curriculum Associates i-Ready diagnostic assessment. These diagnostic assessments provide us with valuable information on student's present levels. This data helps our teachers to differentiate their instruction based on student deficits or provide opportunities accelerate their learning. The i-Ready program also provides an individualized computer-based learning program that focuses on student mastery of different concepts at students current levels. We also utilize state-mandated testing. Kindergarten through third grade utilize MAP reading assessment and third through eight grade students are assessed by the SBAC exam in reading, math, and science.

Students at Pinecrest St. Rose are exposed to a multitude of literacy tasks that ready them for the next levels of learning in their education, we further that by preparing them for post-secondary and workforce literacy readiness as well. Students participate in performance written tasks where they are asked to read, review and write about Scientific findings and happenings. Students learn how to annotate text to provide for a deeper and clearer understanding of the STEM process, careers, and new discoveries happening in today’s news. Students write lab reports, record their findings, and reflect on their discoveries. Students keep interactive notebooks with their own notes, summaries, reflections, and guided worksheets. Students have also been involved in projects such as our “Adopt a Tortoise” project where they created worksheets and technology presentations for different grade levels focusing on their audiences comprehension ability. Students write in APA format when conducting background research and writing papers. Students participate in PLTW’s Medical Detectives elective where they learn how to write patient files and record data such as their vital signs. Students further their literacy while designing experiments and writing procedures to take their knowledge and extend it beyond what they have learned in the classroom.

Students at Pinecrest St. Rose take part in field trips that are STEM based.

Pinecrest St. Rose is a part of a system of five schools. Two of our sister campuses, Pinecrest Sloan Canyon and Pinecrest Cadence offer Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The CTE programs that we are preparing our students for are Aviation Technology , EMT, Computer Science Discoveries, Cyber-security, and Graphic Design. Pinecrest Cadence also offers a Dual Enrollment program and Pinecrest Sloan Canyon will offer a Dual Enrollment program as their school grows to include juniors and seniors.

Academic Plan

All of our middle school students create or update academic plans. These academic plans show all the courses that each student needs to successfully complete middle school before they head off to high school. Within these plans, our students research career fields and diploma types that they are trying to pursue. Students also set long term and short term goals.

Areas to Improve

  • Providing 6th-8th grade students with specific STEM based electives throughout Middle School.

    • Update: Teacher trained in PLTW Gateway Robotics and Automation, Computer Science for Innovators and Makers, Energy and the Environment, and Flight and Space.
