Principles Illustrated: Wave additions, beat frequency
Location: Cabinet C, Shelf 3
Two speakers are driven by two oscillators at close to the same frequency. The beat oscillations are easily distinguished.
Principles Illustrated: Interference
Location: Cabinet C, Shelf 3
Two speakers are driven by a single oscillator. With a frequency of a bout 1KHz, and placed about 1 meter apart, students can experience the interference nodes by moving from side to side in their seats.
Principles Illustrated: Doppler shift
Location: Cabinet C, Shelf 1
A single tone is produced by a speaker at the end of the long arm. When the apparatus is rotated overhead, the shift in tone is clearly demonstrated.
Principles Illustrated: Resonance of open pipe, turbulent flow effects
Location: Cabinet C, Shelf 2
A one meter tube has copper screen placed near one end. The copper screen is heated with a butane flame. Turbulent flow set up from the hot screen drives a low-order resonant mode in the tube. Tilting the tube from the vertical disrupts the flow and causes the tone to subside.
Principles Illustrated: Vibration, sound generation
