Lesson 3
Watershed Tables

Watershed Tables

In this project you will see sources and effects of water pollution. We will simulate storm water runoff and observe and record how it carries pollutants through the watershed. You and your partners will then develop the best management practices to prevent the pollution from damaging your watershed.

Part I: Runoff Simulation

Supplies:

  • 1 tray = The watershed you are working in

  • Spray Bottle filled with water = Rain

  • Legos or blocks= Your town

  • Toy Animals People, Trees = People and nature

  • Small Bottle of Oil= Gasoline

  • Soy Sauce= Oil from factories, cars, etc.

  • Food Dye= Chemical runoff

  • Small Bottle of "Jimmies"= Animal Waste

Part II: Solve the Runoff Problem

In this part of the simulation you will act as an Urban Planner or City Planner and solve the runoff issue. How can you direct waste to go where you need it to go? What do you need to build to clean the water for your citizens?

Supplies:

Play Doh

Straws

Legos/Blocks
