Mentor FLL teams at Masterman middle school in mechanical, coding, and project developing skills - this will help me achieve my goal of doing a lot of outreach this year.
I have mentored at Masterman 4 times this month (every Monday). The kids mainly needed help in the project part of the FLL challenge, and had many questions for me in general. These are some photos I managed to take of the kids at work, unfortunately I wasn't able to take photos with the kids because they weren't comfortable with that.
I believe I achieved my goal this month because I mentored kids in all the fields I mentioned in my goal. I mainly helped in the project developing skills, and steering a team in the right direction when they seemed off track. I also answered many questions about mechanical and coding.
The main thing I learnt this month is that kids don't like to admit that they're lost or need help. I often found myself being told that no help was needed, but when I persevered and asked questions, I found that the kids didn't know a lot of things about the challenge. Overall, I'm glad I was able to give them insight and advice, and hopefully, they became more comfortable with asking for help. I mainly used the resources provided by the FIRST website.
I think this goal helped me in reaching my big goal of doing a lot of outreach because I got about 5 hours of community service from mentoring at Masterman. Because of this outreach, I will also be more experienced when mentoring kids in the future.
